What type of wood should I use? Plain old pine or possible cedar to help prevent root? I just don't want to comtaminate what I end up planting....

If you can get cedar, it will hold up much better than pine. You should not have contamination problems with either one. You do not want to use Pressure Treated wood as the chemicals used to prevent rotting may leach into your growing medium.

If you get a chance, try to view the various threads, some of your questions may be answered from prior posts, but please feel free to ask your questions whether you were able to find relevant posts or not.

Again, Welcome. Please let us know how you are progressing with your new garden, and we I love you pictures

From Mel's All New Square Foot Gardening book:

Page 56: All types of lumber can be used--pine, fir, cedar or redwood--but make sure it is untreated.

Page 57: Mel recommends painting or staining, the top, bottom, and outside of your box boards, but leaving the part of the board touching the MM unpainted. He also mentions that if you don't do that, you could help preserve the wood with linseed oil.
