Tomatos do fine in large buckets ..... just make sure they are at least 10" and very heavy.

The big ceramic, terracotta or stone are best if you have appearance and/or HOA challenges.

5 gallon buckets work best if appearance isn't a concern. 1/2 whiskey barrels arent bad either, as you can companion-plant herbs (eat) or marigolds (pest protection) around the circumference of the larger barrels.

The large size containers are for weight more than anything. You don't necessarily need all that soil depth with Mel's mix, but you need the base weight to keep the plants from toppling over in the wind when they get top-heavy with growth/fruit.

The 10" minimum diameter allows you to use most commercial grow cages on the market today (circular, barrel and square)

I have several pictures of my daughter last year (she is 12) gardening in her p.j.'s, and the only reason I'm not pictured in my p.j.'s is because I hold the phone/camera. See the thing is when you put your garden in beds, you don't have to get dressed to garden, unless you sleep in your birthday suit of course, you wake up dressed to go out to the beds outside. Heck we have jammie day here, we celebrate a whole day dedicated to jammies and junk food.
