Cubic Yard of Compost?
How much MM can I make with a cubic yard of compost? It doesn't sound like much. And it costs $50 a cubic yard. Is that a good price?

Well, MM ideally calls for 5 types of compost. Are you going to buy 5 cubic yards, each of different kinds of compost, or just one and "wing it"?
Re: Cubic Yard of Compost?
The price sounds about right. I can get 1 cu yard of turkey compost for $60. It's what the master gardener at the arboretum uses in the demonstration raised veggie beds. Mixes half and half with top soil. In Wilmington, NC.

Re: Cubic Yard of Compost?
Just for comparison purposes, 1 Cubic Yard is equal to 27 Cu Ft. That's a LOT of compost. Is it all one ingredient?
Each 4 ft X 4 ft X 6 in SFG box needs less than 3 cu ft total of blended compost.
Hope this helps.

So, to answer the question: 1 yard of compost = 27 cu ft. Therefore, at 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, you can make 81 cu ft of MM......or 162 squares that are 6 inches deep.
So, if you have that much to build, then, yup, probably could use the whole yard. However, I would hate to see the price of a yard of vermiculite.

Re: Cubic Yard of Compost?
Thanks everybody! I have 62 squares that need filled, plus a potato box. I guess I could do 1 CU and just save the rest. You can never have too many SFG's!!

Re: Cubic Yard of Compost?
I get the vermiculite from Menard's and it's less than $15 for the huge bag. I think 1 bag does one of my beds. :?: I'm going to have to double check.BackyardBirdGardner wrote:
