Shannon, thats what I thought they were too. I want to find as many as I can while they are little to lessen damage, and because they really freak me out when they get all big and fat!
I topped off most of the toms that I didn't string up. It was hard, but I did it!
Thanks for the advise!

I do like Monty Python, but I got Sheldon from Big Bang Theroy. One of the characters is always being told he looks like a giant praying mantis! Very Happy

Post  duhh 5/18/2011, 4:37 am

Been a busy month so far with all the tomato harvesting. My yellow pear tomatoes are pumping them out! I have now picked over 300 in the past 3-4 weeks! wow! My family, co workers and some lucky clients really love me right now. This last week we were also able to get a few black Russian princes, green zebras, and some tiny romas. Those plants are tiny and the toms are smaller than the yellow pears!

Have some weirdness going on with some of my tomatoes and can't figure out if I have a diseases, lack of nutrients, or maybe even high ph? Not sure. Hope I figure it out soon though!

Also been going out on nightly hunts for the dreaded horn worms. Have found at least 10 large ones this week alone!

Pulled up all the lettuce it was beginning to go to seed. Spinach is still hanging in there. Cilantro is gone as well

Have also gotten shade cloth up and that seems to have made everything happier.

Now for some pics!

First is this last weeks tomato harvest. See the tiny romas!

My back wall garden. the melons are beginning to take off! I have also pruned these toms up since this pic
2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 00715

Nephews garden. his white pumpkin is taking over. I was going to let it sprawl, but now might do a trellis!
2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 01313

Sheldon is growing up so fast. I can almost always find him on this pepper plant
2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 02710

Yellow pears taller than the pergola! these guys are a mess. 2 weeks ago I hacked them up so I could actually see into the mess of plants, but they quickly grew back. Guess I'll have to get the trimmers out again. Maybe a weed eater?? or a hedge trimmer? Wink
2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 00419

OMG!!! he had the nerve to "sit" there and eat the tom leaf right there in front of me! It was fascinating to watch just how fast he demolished a whole leaf though. I now have my nephew and his friend out there looking for them with me.
They are easier to find at night though.

Well enough for tonight. I am looking forward to picking the first of my yellow summer squash this next week, my cucumber is setting it's first fruit and I planted tiger melons, banana melons, and a white watermelon this last week. Can't wait to see them sprout! also my corn might be getting big enough to plant pole beans and my pie pumpkin.(3 sisters) Life is good here in AZ!! Hope you are all doing well and having fun! Remember: be good or be good at it!

Tell us more about your shade cloth, please! Is it actually shade fabric? If so, what %? If not, what is it?

I need to get something up but I keep changing my mind as to what.

Thanks Tril, I go back and forth. My nephews friend takes the ones when he is here for his little brother. when I find them I admit I do dispose of them because I don't want my garden to become a huge breeding ground and then I would be left bare plants!

I don't feel like I spend to much time in my garden. Although, right now I am spending a little extra looking out for the horn worms about 15 mins a day or so! I only have to water about 2 times a week right now and that maybe takes 1/2 an hour. Wednesdays and Sundays are my days off so I usually spend about 1- 1 1/2 hours out in the garden, but half the time I'm looking for things to do. I look for anything to do to keep me from having to prune the yellow pears! they are such a jungle I put it off a lot of the times. Right now harvesting takes up a lot of time too. thats the best part!

If all goes as planned we hope to expand the garden next spring to include the entire back wall. Right now we have about 1/3 but wanted to make sure it didn't get to hot and burn the plants to fast in the summer. We also have more space under the pergola. either another 4x8, but have been toying with the idea of a pyramid box, or maybe Two 2x8 since I seem to like all the trellising space hog plants. Also, may have room for 1 more either 4x8 or 4x4 in front. We will see! I would like to have enough to can all my tomatoes for the year. Maybe next year.
Keeping the tomatoes pruned up helps me find the tomato horn worms easier. Also, I walk through the garden 1-2x per day so when something has been munched on recently I usually know it and start looking for it. Half the time I'm on my phone so I don't count that as real garden time since I'm multi tasking!

My husband picked up the shade cloth at home depot. here is the description. Might be a little over kill, but all plants still get some morning or afternoon sun. None seem to be suffering.

My tomatillio plant looks like it is actually trying to do something. It's getting big and there are little husks on it. Just hope it grows something in them!

Everything is pretty good here. Will try and plant the pole beans with my corn this week for the 3 sisters.

Pulled up the last of the spinach after it began bolting

Mellons plants are getting big, and finally flowering.

Duhh, is that cucumber one of the Armenian cukes? It looks good, so do the tomatoes and your first squash. I just started cucumbers and squash today. MM and the soil at the community garden finally got to 60/64 degrees.

It is amazing how big your tomatoes get, then you prune them and they get huge again!

Why yes, it is an Armenian Cuke. I'm gonna pick it and slice it up for my salad tonight! I'm so excited. My aunt grew them in her garden last year and she gave me one. They are now a must in my garden. My hubby doesn't really like cucumbers so I didn't have any the first year. this year I have 3 types. Armenian, lemon, and pickling!

Thanks family gardening

Garden update. Most of my "sick?" Tomato plants are looking better with new growth, but we didn't get as many large slicing tomatoes as we wanted. The ones we did get have been wonderful! It's really hard to pick a favorite. I went out to pick some of the large tomatoes and the birds had beat me to about 5 of them! I did come inside with 3, but it annoys me. I should make sure the cats are outside before leaving or hang some cds or something to scare the birds. I'm not willing to share that much with the birds. the dogs did enjoy the bird pecked tomatoes though. I am amazed to still see some new tomato blossoms even with the heat. I am assuming its because of the shade cloth. squash doing ok, tomatillio plant is huge, but not sure how much we will get from it.

Yellow pears are still going! Up about 2 feet above the pergola now. The sun doesn't seem to be bothing them much either right now. I have saved seeds from these plants!
2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 02913

this picture didn't turn out to well, but I am to lazy to go and redo it! Tomatoes have reached the shade cloth and are either growing up behind it or pushing it up! I have plans for next year to hang it higher. The moon and stars watermelon is trying to take over that bed. I planted it on the end so it could sprawl. Lots of basil too!

Where has the time gone? Its hot here. I don't mind the heat, but now monsoon season has started and there is humidity! I don't do humidity!
Oh well, soon it will be all nice again I'll love AZ again!

Most of the tomato plants are looking a little.... crispy I guess is a good way to explain it. They have stopped setting fruit while it's so hot and now I have to decide if I want to try and nurse them through the summer, or just replant new ones come Sept. . . I think it will be a mixture of both. Unfortunately the birds go a lot of my large tomatoes. I will figure something out for next year.

All my peppers are taking off. I did have a little problem with BER but I think I have that under control now thanks to some powder milk I added. I have also been saving my clean egg shells and grinding them up in my blender. I plan to add them to my mels mix when I fall plant.

Melon plants are going crazy! The white pumpkin is still trying to take over the world, despite the squash bug invasion. I now go out at least every other day and look for their eggs and for any adults I can find and squish them.
Now for pictures!!

Had a storm come through last night, but doesn't look like there was to much damage. Everything looks happy for the rain!

2011 garden Glendale, AZ (duhh) planted 2-13-2011 - Page 2 00124

My nephews garden is now just 2 plants! The pumpkin and the sugar baby plant. I should have trellised them both. I also need to trim back the pumpkin.

I did it. I finally cut down the beastly yellow pear plants! They were 10 feet tall at least and now the tallest is maybe 3-4 feet. I pretty much cut them back to the lowest new growth. I was tempted to cut the a little lower, but wasn't brave enough. I hope they can last this last hot month, but only time will tell.

Most of this bed was planted Oct of 2010! Yellow pear tomatoes with their latest hair cut. Right peppers, onions, and tiger melon. Right jalapenos and some volunteer tomatoes

We have seedlings going for the fall garden. right now I'm pretty content with allowing the melons to overrun the tomato areas until its time to plant again. It's to hot to get out there as much as I would like to right now.

I also scored some little 4x6x6 greenhouses on craigslist. They remind me of a tent like material. They are just temporary. I plan on using one over a 4x4 to over winter some larger tomato varieties and get an early start on them for next spring. Another for seed starting for the spring, and the third I'm giving to my mother for Christmas. She has really enjoyed the garden this year, especially since the birds ate most of my big tomatoes and she was able to share hers with me! She was very proud of that.

Planted carrots, beets, chard, and kale a couple of days ago. I was told by another gardener that they should be ok this early. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Also had our first watermelon! It was a sugar baby and amazingly sweet! Hubby has some tomato plants growing for the fall garden along with broccoli and cauliflower. My nephew made us leave some space in his box for peas! He can't wait for it to be cool enough for him to have peas in the garden again this year. We only planted 4 squares last year and very few made it into the house, and it wasn't because they weren't producing!

Also, Hubby is building me a 4x4 TT garden for my lettuce and spinach. I hate having to get down to harvest them all the time! Bought some tulle(sp?) the other day to cover the whole thing and hopefully keep the bugs off of it!

Summer is almost over! Can't wait for the fall garden!

These guys popped up over night!!! Don't know what is up with that! I pulled them out. The only thing different is my hubby added some worm castings Wed. and has been making compost tea.... hmm It was kinda creepy to go out and see these all over with my sugar baby melons!

Hope the garden hangs in here with the heat! It's been 115 for the past couple days and some stuff is suffering.

Finally it's cooling down! I can get out there and plant some more. Last week I planted lettuce, spinach, kale, and chard all under the area of my garden that still has some shade cloth up over it. I also transplanted my tomato seedlings that have been waiting so patiently to be put in my sfg. I did loose 1 out of the 10 so far. That's not bad for me!

I already have baby lettuce, kale, chard and spinach! I planted sugar snap peas today. I need to fix one of my deeper beds before planting the carrots and beets. The way hubby put it together isn't quite working out, but with a few tweaks, it will do nicely. Later this week I will plant kohlrabi seeds and transplant my broc. and cauliflower.... . . . well maybe, I still need to look up temps for them. It is still hanging at the low 100's high 90's. It just seems so cool too me that I want to plant everything! bounce Can you tell I'm excited for fall/winter? Just a couple pics for tonight. I wanted to show my new TT for most of my lettuce and spinach. I say most because I know I will find empty spaces in the garden to put more.

New TT

Full view of garden. Most of my shade cloth has come down. I left the middle for my newly transplanted Tomatoes

tomato starts waiting to get out there! (now planted for a week)

broc, cauliflower starts when they were still small enough to be under the lights

I Still have peppers, watermelons, tiger melon, and basil growing from the summer. Will swap them out for something else once they slow down. Also, I need to finally get a grid on my 8x4 while I can easily get in there. (Before The toms overtake it again)
Have a great one!

Looks great! I threw my tomatoes out in the garden several weeks ago and pulled the shade cloths off about 2 weeks ago and within the past week everything has doubled in size. 107 v 100 degrees seems to make a big difference!
