Post  acara 11/23/2010, 12:18 pm

Anyone tried this before?

I'm just thinking ..... 3x3 or 4x4 SFG that you could rotate as needed to access the box (access, directional sunlight, planting ease in tight space locations).

Bearing set, 4" to 36" collumn spacer (either to run irrigation line up into box so it could still rotate freely,or if you wanted an raised box) ..... viola ..... spinning SFG.

Tenatively, I'm thinking one of those telephone/cable wire spools would work perfectly for an elevated application?

It's okay if nobody's tried ..... just looking if anyone has tried-and-failed-horribly & can give me a "dont-do-it-man !!!" Very Happy

LOL I've read your post for what it is: an engineer thinking out loud, with more money than time on his hands! Being the person you might hand off your drawings to, to make the assembly a reality, I say: Don't Do It, Man! The cost per square foot of growing space will be...well...A LOT! I have an old trailer axle that I have considered cutting off one wheel assembly and burying the axle vertically in concrete to make a lazy susan. Is it do-able, yes. Practical, no...IMHO.

But, brainstorming is fun, so...a cable spool on swivel casters would be cheap, easy, and practical.

Here's a simple idea, made from fan housings with dead motors. I plant cool crops on the shady north side so there's no reason to rotate it.

An after thought: if you build your lazy susan, why not put a geared down motor on it to turn the assembly for sunshine, and to have a stationary water sprinkler?! Wink

Boffer, that looks for all the world like an old-timey hardware bin. You know, the one that sat in the back of the store near the glass-cutting counter, and held all the nuts and bolts and screws that the store sold in bulk. (usually a stack of little paper bags laying on top of the hardware to scoop them into, and a pencil on a string to write the part #)

Which would make a KILLER AWESOME SFG -- heavy duty, has the rotation mechanism already included, and has bins deep enough to actually grow something. AND had casters on the bottom so you could move it (assuming you had a hard flat surface to set it on)

Old-timey bins for old timers! My two favorite, independent hardware stores still use them. There's just something about getting pin pricked a hundred times while trying to get a pound of nails into a paper bag that really appeals to me! Razz

I agree they would make an awesome planter. I better talk to the owner who has been threatening to remodel/upgrade, to see about first dibs! Thanks for the idea.

I bet one of those would give acara's HOA a fit! lol!

You notice I'm enough of an old-timer to recognize one when I see it! (That plus 15 years of visiting every hardware store in every wide spot in the road in the eastern half of the country)

Actually, if you planted those to cascading-type flowers, they'd be flat-out gorgeous. I can see purple and pink Wave petunias and fuschias tumbling out of a big tower like that, so how can you outlaw something that pretty? The heads of the HOA board would just go *foom* as they tried to sort that one out.

i think if you have the time and money and desire - go for it.

or just use those 12inch square planters and put them on casters and wheel around your square whereever you want/whenever you want. Smile

steve - nice stack of plantings!

Howdy Folks:

Well now, how about cascading strawberries to go with the flowers? Strawberries put out runners that have daughters that will readily root when they reach down to new soil so you could plant in the top bin and watch as they moved on down over time. OK, OK I'm nuts over strawberries, at least until something else catches my fancy.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Actually I was thinking to equip it with a CNC-turret & hardwire it into a laptop which would then cause it to rotate in tandem with the optimum lunar cycle affraid

Should be okay with the HOA, as long as I paint it white, eh?

LOL .... she's happy as a clam. My gardening shenanigans are nothing compared to some of my former tinkering escapades.

Actually, I'm torn between the wire spool lazy susan, and the "flyer" yardsale ad I saw last night for a barber shop going out of business this week. The thought of what I could do with an old barber shop chair base, a hydraulic servo, a pedal actuator & a SFG box have had me giggling to myself all morning.

I'm realy hoping they call me into work Friday .... or I'm gonna get myself in a whole heap of trouble with a full day off & three day weekend Embarassed

Post  Odd Duck 11/24/2010, 3:57 pm

Now if you had an old wooden spool, you could run the water up through the middle to the sprinkler, and just use 8" bender board screwed to the inside and outside edges. Or just put a plywood base on top of the wire spool and fasten bender board to that and have your bearings, etc between. Hmm, I wonder if you could find some old unloading tracks like they send boxes down from a truck, the kind with all the wheels? They make some curved ones, don't they? Fasten it to the wire spool and cut grooves into the underside of the plywood? Or you could take it apart and just fasten sections of track around the curve of the spool.

I can't wait to see this happen! Laughing
