Southern California November Update

Post  Chopper on 11/3/2010, 3:08 pm

Just got back after a week and as hoped, things grew! Like a watched pot - it certainly seems faster when you are not checking every day. The celery has finally become visible to the naked eye so everyone took part in the growth spurt.

The peas grew about a foot while I was gone. These are shell peas. I planted some sugar snaps in another bed and they are doing well but are about 2 weeks behind.

I have some eggplant coming in as well as some peppers still. And the lettuce is looking good. I am on the offensive with snails and cabbage moths - snail poison and Bt. Snails would devastate all the crops if I let them. That said, the sweet potatoes have some holes in the leaves but not so many I feel a need to attack and I think they are just about ready to harvest at this point.

How does your garden grow?

Suitable for planting this month in So Cal:
Beets
Broccoli
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Leeks
Lettuce
Onions Bunching
Onions/Garlic sets
Parsley
Peas
Spinach

Overview of the late September bed. It is coming along: Peas in the back, carrots, beets, cabbage, broccoli, some herbs and my pepper plant that is still producing!

Nice looking cabbage - so far:

Fast growing peas:

Onions that I wasn't sure were viable when I planted them:

Never leave a zucchini alone for a week - had it been midsummer it would probably be the size of a Yugo:

I experimented with not putting in the twine for the SF markers - just drew lines. I have already planted but I don't like it. I will be adding twine tout de suite. Need the square foot part of SFG delineated - I do anyway.

Beautiful photos, Chopper. The last one looks like something out of a gardening magazine.

It's nice to read about people still able to plant when so many of us are putting our gardens to bed for the winter.

Keep 'em coming, please.
