Making SFB into compost pile?
I harvested all my carrots the other day and pulled all the plants but the peppers. I decided to put a thick layer of carrot tops in a blanket over the top of all the beds to decompose this fall rather than the compost pile. I didn't think the carrots carried too many strange diseases and I figured it would eliminate some of the MM from blowing away. Already in a few days there isn't much left to them. Anyone else put compost directly onto their beds at the end of the season?

That's my plan, instead of trying a green manure, grass clippings and chopped leaves going right in the bed this fall. confidence is high.

Yes, during the late fall and winter----I put finely chopped leaves , dry unseeded grass clippings, and some cotton seed meal for nitrogen and a little crushed horse manure into the bed---gypsum----- turn it over--- cover it up---- and let it rest for the winter with a few waterings.

Does it matter what you put ? should you do some and not others? my thinking is that it would be like leaving "garbage or food" uncovered for the critters to come and be attracted to your garden bed??

Leaves and grass clippings, etc., should not be a problem. For any actual fruits/veg, etc., I would put those in your compost pile.
Re: Making SFB into compost pile?
For the last bed I made I was ready to go with it before I had the money to get more compost, etc. So I dumped a partially finished trash can of compost into the box and added one bag of compost to the top and just planted. It has been very prolific. If I was going to rest my beds for a few months I would not hesitate to put leaves and grass clippings on the bed and then cover it with a tarp or something.
That said, there is that whole group who do the lasagna beds - piling compost materials directly onto the area they plan to plant. I do not know how long it takes to break down, but might be worth looking up and seeing what they say.

Re: Making SFB into compost pile?
My grandfather just told me what he use to do----I want to try it.
He took his veggie trash from the kitchen------potato peelings, onions, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower-------etc.........................
and chopped it the blender til liquefied and poured it into his garden beds.
I have a problem while visualizing this liquid that is to be poured into the garden.
But------He did not have a Food Processor back in his gardening days and I think it would be better in a food processor-----finely chopped and not pureed. Then use a potato hoe to mix it into the bed during the winter months. I would stop adding it to the beds about 2 months before planting time-----personally.
Grandfather= 80 yrs old.

When I was little, my chickens got most of the veggie trash / peelings / etc. And oh boy did they love it! Anything else went to the manure pile.

Same here. Did you know chickens LOVE potato beetles and cabbage worms?Megan wrote:When I was little, my chickens got most of the veggie trash / peelings / etc. And oh boy did they love it! Anything else went to the manure pile.
