Second Start
I didn’t do nearly as well as I’d hoped with my garden. I did get some tomatoes, but only two real producers from the 12 varieties I planted. I’ll definitely plant Juliets and Chocolate Cherries again next year. But I’ll plant tomatoes farther apart, with low-growing things in between. My ‘Purple Cherokee’ (as per the label) weren’t Cherokees – they turned out to produce small red cherry tomatoes that were too sour for my taste. None of my other tomatoes did much of anything.
I did have peas, lettuce, spinach and carrots that produced… I’m putting in seedlings for a fall crop of these (well… not the peas – I think I’m late for those.
My pepper plants each had a very small crop…. Two bell peppers, one Anaheim, one poblano and about a dozen jalapenos. I’ll try peppers again next year (but maybe different varieties). Eggplant – I had three plants, each of which produced one fruit, but some critter got two of those.
My herbs did a lot better – most of them in native soil, but my cilantro, fennel and basil did very well in my SFG box. I’ve harvested the seed from the cilantro (coriander) and the fennel has bolted and I should have fennel seed soon. Basil has been turned into about 6 ice cube trays of pesto for use in winter.
So now I’ll be pulling out all the ‘done’ stuff (Juliet is still producing, though!!) and putting in garlic, potato-onions, and some kale seedlings. These will all go in one of my existing two boxes. The second box will be emptied and re-located, and a third box will be put in, in the spring.
I'm also working on the idea of a cold frame, that I'd like to try to put together in the next couple of weeks. I have a great southern exposure next to the house, so it should hold a good bit of warmth. I have the materials, except the windows, which I'll probably find at the Habitat Re-Store. I plan to make this one 12" deep (so I can grow longer carrots) and an angled side to a height of 24" so I can plant something a little taller toward the back (against the house). The cold frame will be 2' front to back, and about 8' long.
I’ve learned a lot this year. Soon it'll be time to peruse the catalogs and start drawing up my plans...I have high hopes for next year!

Re: Second Start
My Purple Cherokees were still kicking and screaming as of Sept 30 when I tore the vines out. I pulled several quarts worth of green tomatoes that are now ripening on my windowsill. (They probably would have died in the next few days, though, as our weather took an abrupt turn for the colder in the first few days of October.)
I don't know tomatoes well enough to tell if they are better than average. Sounds silly I'm sure, but I've only very recently learned to enjoy raw tomatoes.
Glad to hear you've had fun this year, Wyld... I sure did!

Re: Second Start
Sounds like you faired better than us. The roma tomatoes produced a few tomatoes, but all were about 1/8 the size of a normal roma. Mr. Stripy didn't do anything, and I don't think I got any peppers. On the plus side we did get so many kinds of lettuce that most of it went unharvested. We also got lots of peas.
This year I'll be planting more and hopefully staying on it better.

Re: Second Start
Wyldflower,
I hope this year brings you more success in your beds. I didn't get as many peppers as I'd hoped, nor eggplant nor zucchini. That last is usually so rampant that neighbors hide when they see me coming with spare zucchini.
All in all, I can't complain too much. I lost several of my tom plants to hornworm. I didn't even know about those creatures til my hand accidently brushed up against this monster on a tomato plant. Found nearly a dozen more of them on other toms and got rid of them. The next day I only found two but in the meantime they had pretty much denuded several tomato plants. Silly me was blaming the damage on chipmunks. I still had enough to freeze roasted toms for adding to tomato dishes thru the winter and my family loved the added zest to the sauces and chilis.
This year we'll have a later start, unfortunately. My garden is still under over a foot of snow and the weather isn't cooperating enuf for a good melt. By mid-March last year I was planting carrots, spinach, lettuces, scallions, and radishes.
A terrible windstorm last November crashed my A-frame so I've been to Lowe's to buy a new replacement pole and will put that up as soon as I can. It provided some early crops last year and took my Matt's Wild Cherry into mid-Nov until that storm.
Let's all think positive that this year will be better for all of us.
Good luck gardening friends.
