Starting off in the Fall
I live in an apartment with a south/east facing balcony and have had minimal success growing in the past using pots, mostly because the soil i was using wouldn't properly hold moisture so the plants were all begging for mercy by the time I came home from work each day. Getting compost, mixing soil always seemed like something I should be doing in the actual ground to grow a garden like I had growing up, not for gardening in containers so I was so excited to find my way here.
How realistic is making compost in smaller containers to use for the soil mix? I'm looking to have a 4x8 (still working on the box to get a good fit and not use the whole balcony) and have seen a lot on the web in general about using a smaller plastic container with holes drilled. Can i realistically put this outside with the cooler weather and expect this to work or am I going to have to bring the container inside to maintain a temp that will allow things the pile to decompose?

This may just be the apartment size thing you are looking for. There are numerous posts about compost on the forum, you can check them out using the search feature

to the forum.
I would say traditional composting methods would be ineffective in your situation. Camp's link is a good alternative. Once your box is setup, this link might be a good idea for you too

Then, you might read the posts of El, who is a forum member living in a NYC apartment. She has some interesting ideas for SFG in apartments. You can find her posts here

A solution to your watering issues can be found here. The concept is a good one, but the containers can be easily made and modified at little expense, and then filled with Mel's Mix.

Re: Starting off in the Fall
thank you for the direction! I hope to get this all figured out so I can get some lovely things growing come spring. Now i'm off to look at tables for suggested planting times. I grew up in the mid west with a decidedly different climate so that will present another fun learning curve on this process.
