4 little pigs Empty 4 little pigs

Post  WardinWake on 9/27/2010, 10:55 am

Howdy Folks:

After starting the building of another box this morning (2X8 table top) I went inside to get a drink and to my suprise 4 little pigs were roaming through the back yard. They by-passed the garden so I guess they are OK. I'll have to call the neighbor across the street and let her know her latest crop of pigs are loose.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

That happened to me a few years ago, but the piglets came with their mama. Now, just exactly what are you supposed to do with a big ol' stray sow and her kids? A stray horse, a stray goat, a stray dog-no problem. A couple apples interested the kids, but mama would go where mama wanted to go. It took her about 1 second to put a 10 foot long trench in my new lawn with her snout. Multiple trenches...grrr

I called a neighbor, who called a neighbor, who knew a pig owner....who finally showed up with his son, a sack of corn and a couple sticks. They proceeded to herd their pig family the quarter mile back home. They'd just 'gone for a walk' through an open gate!

It was about six months later when the pig owner showed up with a ham and 10 pounds of bacon. And the world was right again!

This post made me realize I have cows across the street, goats and sheep few doors down in several neighbors yards, mules catywompus (another technical term Belfry Bat Smile) from me, horses on nearly every side...but I never see pigs around here....hmmm wonder why.

In AZ we had pigs...wild ones called Havalina...oh man...they reek havoc on a garden....man oh man...and to be honest they don't even taste good. LOL

My aunt had 30 Hogs inside her house once! They were out of town and left a light on inside, the hogs got spooked by a storm and broke out of the hoops. They nosed the sliding door open and got in the house. All the carpet, furniture, and floors were ruined. A few on them fell down the stairs to the basement. Did you know pigs can't use stairs?!

To make it worse their insurance company didn't want to pay for any of it because they don't cover domesticated (pet) animals. It was a big fight that included dragging a brand new 20-something agent out to see the hogs and see how "tame" they are. The poor kid was scared out of his brains!!!

No kidding -- I grew up in the Midwest, and lots of people we knew had hog farms, and I've spent more than a few hours helping move piglets, etc..

Then came the pot-bellied pig craze in the early 90s...my ex wanted to get one, and couldn't figure out why I threw a fit, because animals with hooves and snouts are hogs and belong in a barn and not in a living room! Between Charlotte's Web and Babe, everyone has this idea that pigs are wonderful animals to have around (they ARE smart; no doubting that) -- but pigs are given a pretty healthy streak of just plain mean!

the first year we were in business, we knew someone who had two pigs, and we gave them all of our food waste. We loved it - and the pigs lived 6 miles away, so no visitors!

I love Wilbur and Babe, but they didn't the pigs any favors - I used to volunteer at the MSPCA. They have one location that handles rescued farm animals, and they had so many VPB pigs, because people are not prepared for the reality of a pig as a "pet". I am still capable of loving the big ugly adult ones, but not in my yard or house!

Boffer, I am really glad that the pig owner you knew understood how to make amends!
