Unhappy tomatoes?
Last night, I posted the photo below of a foliage problem on my two big tomato plants. Someone (Carolyn?) said it might be early blight.
I noticed this later in the evening and took a picture this morning. Two of the tomatoes are black on the end. I thought it was BER, but the discolored flesh is not yucky/mushy, it seems to have the same texture and resistance to my fingers as the rest of the fruit. There are other fruit on the plant that don't seem to be affected. Is this more evidence of blight?? Is this fruit safe to eat, assuming it ripens?

Too late to edit.
Looking at this.... I'm wondering if it's not late blight. Either way, time to pull those two toms. Do I have to tear out the plants completely? They are just finally starting to bear!!!

Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
The fruit pics are definitely BER.
As for which problem your tomato plants have---only you can inspect the leaves inside and out--- and look and see if you have lesions on the stems to decide if they have Blight. From here-at a glance-- it looks like blight------but the website you gave --it also looks like drought stress--which in turn could cause your BER.
So----if you cannot find white mold or gray mold--- or lesions---Assume it is
Drought stress.

Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
If you are pretty sure it is late blight, then it sounds like they are kaput and need to be quarantined asap per everything I read. Bummer.
Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
The stems don't have any of those nasty lesions.... just a minor pick-marks the size of a pin-head which might be bug damage, color is whitish or light tan, not those nasty bulls-eye dark sores.
We have had spates of torrential rain and really hot weather... so I'm going to cross my fingers and hope it is drought stress. I looked today and didn't see any fungal filaments/etc, but I will look a lot closer tomorrow.
I just bought some non-organic fungicide and am praying I don't have to use it.
THANK YOU

Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
I just wanted to post a few links---just in-case they might be helpful to someone.
the first one is just ton of pics of the many ways BER-blossom end rot can look like
http://www.google.com/images?q=Blossom+end+rot+on+tomatoes+pictures&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=0PSKTNbaMsOC8gag34WfDA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCQQsAQwAA&biw=1280&bih=798
this one is on controlling blights--- and fungus.
I wish I could go totally organic but if I did-- I would be adding to the more wide spread of blights and other fungus.

Not trying to be cute here ..... I don't know gardening and I'm not a chemical engineer or anything ...but Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate & does not contain calcium ??
Low calcium (content or absorption) => BER, MgSO4 (Epsom salt) = no calcium
Is there something else to mix with the epsom to provide the calcium to the plant?? Or does a certain brand of the epsom contain a calcium based filler material or something?
I know magnesium facilitates absorbtion/utilization of chemicals in other plants ..... but I'm having trouble connecting the dots here?
Are they recommending the MgSO4 to possibly "unlock" the calcium thats already in your growing media?
I love my 'maters (second only to my cukes) & it would kill me to do all of this work & then loose them to BER. One of the main reasons I put a drip irrigation/controller in my box was to make sure I had regulated watering (frequency and amount), in order to prevent stuff like this (I read that "random" watering can contribute to BER, catface and splitting on 'maters ??).
I guess "I don't know, but it worked" is fine, but I'd like to educate myself a little & know why the Epsom is recommended to add calcium?

Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
Acara,
If I am remembering right (and I might not be) the Epsom salts help the plant metabolize calcium.
I put in an irrigation system too, but I STILL have splitting! Crazy rain.... but they are pretty maters anyway! The one really made me cry was the one that literally burst when it was ripe. I thought, "I'll pick it tomorrow, get just a leetle bigger!" and sure enough it rained that night, and

Yes, I guess that website on Preventing BER did not explain itself very well.
The Magnesium in the Epsom Salt helps make the calcium that is already in the soil--more available to the plant.
Catfacing.==From my knowledge==catfacing happens when the tomato
blossom pollinates during cool temps--causing abnormal blossom end.
Irregular watering causes irregular nutrient uptake to the plant which causes BER.
Abundance of watering at one time causes splitting.

Living it right now!!
I've had 1 day of work left on th SFG box, for four days now
Hoping for some non--liquid sunshine today, so I can finish.
The dang cucumbers have been smoking crack or something & are growing at about 4"/day (even have yellow flowers already ...yikes!!). If I don't get these trellis'd supported this weekend I'm toast.
Fortunately everything else is being patient and growing 'normal'

Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
Looking more and more at the pictures... I am thinking/hoping it is BER and stress.
Re: Unhappy tomatoes?
I think it looks like BER and stress, too. I hope it bolsters your courage if I tell you Tiny Tim, the patio tomato that won't quit, developed similar lesions on some leaves during the heat wave (and three of his fruit just remained stunted and teeny), but is now putting out new stems, leaves and flowers. Hang in there and keep nursing your plants. Tomatoes can put up with a lot, it seems!
