Shrinking soil???

Post  janice on 9/3/2010, 10:04 am

Hi:
So, I finally found the vermiculite but it was the fine grade. Since I am planting in containers, I made the mix in small batches mixing equal portions of vermiculite, peat moss and compost -right?- The mix came out very light and grainy. I filled my containers and wet as instructed and planted last. I have noticed that the level of the soil is now lower than when I started and some roots are now exposed. Is this normal or did I just make my mix wrong? I haven't poured any more mix on top because there are still some sproutings goin on...

When I fill a new box, I make about 1/3 more mix than what the box holds. It will compact throughout the first season.

Hi Janice! Welcome to the forum and to SFG! glad you\'re here

I ended up with the fine vermiculite also, it worked out fine though I did have to spray it down with water because it was breezy on the day I mixed everything up. Mix does settle, I don't think you did anything wrong.

You can add more if you want, shouldn't hurt anything, just do it a little at a time so the sprouts have time to adjust to it.

Springfield isn't that far away; if you'd like to come see my garden sometime just drop me a PM. This is my first year at SFG, I'm no expert by any means but maybe seeing one in full swing will help! Very Happy
