Today I checked out all the garden supply places in town looking for garlic to plant and NOBODY had any. How disappointing. And they all acted like I was from outer space when I asked about it. They all said they get it in spring. When I said that doesn't give a long enough growing season and that garlic and onions too for that matter all do better if planted in fall they just shrugged and said that is when it comes in. Lousy customer service really bugs me.

So I phoned my seed source in Vancouver and they are expecting theirs in any day. Guess I will have to order it. However, they are a great source and I can order some onions too and some mason bees.

As an experiment I bought a head of garlic at the supermarket and I will try that in one square as an experiment. I have to get something planted on these days off!

I can't find garlic starts anywhere around here, either. I have a link to a Southern Virginia place that has some, supposedly... I want to try one of their small assortment packages.

P.S.... When carrots start flowering, does that mean they're done?? Very Happy

GK

For last fall and this spring, supermarket garlic has been our source! It has performed well for us, either just using the tender greens in salads or enjoying the little fresh bulbs. I do have on my to-do list to try to grow "proper" garlic.

Supermarket garlic should "scratch that itch" to grow something with low cost.

I am in Dallas, so your mileage may vary.

Good luck!

The carrot quits growing, and the flavor deteriorates. I guess you could let it grow for the seeds.

Since carrots are biennials, I would think they are finished because they are starting to produce seeds. Here in my zone, we only get them doing that if we plant them one year, harvest what we want in the fall, then leave some in the ground over the winter until the second summer. Then they produce flowers and seeds. They are most likely past their prime by now.

That's what I get for letting the rampicante get out of hand... it's hard to walk back there now!! I'll have to pull them all tomorrow. I planted them from seed this spring, this is the first year. They are putting up cute little flower heads like queen anne's lace or dill... that's what I get for not paying attention!

GK,
Just noticed you were in Canada. I don't know how your zone will handle overwinter of garlic. Why not hedge the bet and plant some of the cloves of the bulb outside as planned and some in a container for inside growth. Best fall growth wins next year! (I love experiments)
