Basket of strawberries? Empty Basket of strawberries?

Post  Weedless_ 7/22/2010, 11:00 am

So I am now starting to hear voices in my head about possibly planting a bunch of strawberries in a pretty basket.
I have an old basket that looks really cool, but I have no use for it, and it will look gorgeous with strawberries cascading out of it. Anyone tried that? Anything I need to know?
Also, of course, can I plant them now or it's completely off the season?

Now, wouldn't that be gorgeous!

Your definition and MY definition of "out of season" are different because of where we live....MN has such a short season compared to others. Sooooo........

I say go for it. You're not going to use the basket for anything else, right? And as far as strawberries go, if you could get your hands on some.....why not?
Here in MN I'd have to look to farmers markets for the plants, as I believe greenhouses may be out of them. Maybe an everbearing variety for your area would still produce for you. And if production is low this season (most likely), then so what, next year it'll be stellar!

Sounds like a cute idea.

I actually read that you can plant strawberries any time, except, if they are planted after June, the first set of flowers needs to be removed to ensure strong root growth for next season. So I am definitely gonna give it a try.

Listen to the voices , I think they have a vision ! what are you going to line the basket with ? I saw the coconut fiber basket liners at Big Lots for $3.00 and I think JoAnn's was having a sale on all items garden and saw them there cheap. Love to see it posted later.
