Re: Cucumbers!
Awesome stuff. We eat a lot of cucumbers, I can't wait for my plants to start producing. My husband would have eaten those in one sitting!
Cucmbers!
Beautiful! My harvest is a little more moderate, but I'm still eating fresh cukes almost daily. They're organic and have no wax coating. Ain't it wonderful?

cukes
you know this is the first time I've grown cukes and I am embarrased to say I don't know what kind they are , I bought the plants in a pony pack at the Target garden center on sale the last week of April and hurried to get them planted , 3 died but the other 3 are still going ! Mel said in his new cookbook that as long as you harvest they will still produce but as soon as you let even one go too long the plant shuts down. Happy cukes everyone!

I think my favorite thing about home grown is no wax coating. Yuk. I do have hard water marks in the tomatoes, but I can live with that.
Re: Cucumbers!
Great looking cukes
I've been getting about 2-3/wk
and enjoying cucumber & cream cheese sandwiches.

Re: Cucumbers!
I had my first cucumber sandwich last week, but have been happily crunching them raw too. Yay!
Re: Cucumbers!
we just harvested our first cucumber (ever, by the way - not just this year!) but I didn't get to have any. My husband is mean to me. (that's him not letting me taste!)
So, Chopper, do the skins taste better since they've never been waxed? Who came up with that crazy idea, anyway?

I smell a cucumber hog!!!
Our Poona Kheeras have relatively thick skins (I think??) but the whole fruit is so crisp that it's just yummy! Love them. There is no way to eat these guys quietly.

I think so! I think the wax is slightly bitter. But I do know that it sure FEELS better.
beautiful cukes
You've got some beautiful burpless-type cukes there. I'm so jealous. The heat wave and drought knocked mine out of production and they're just now starting to set again. I got two small pickling cukes from my vines before the weather zapped 'em. My burpless vines didn't even set a single fruit, but after the rain they're blooming again.
Your beauties give me renewed hope! Thanks for posting the photo.

It may not be the wax that's bitter. It may be the skin of the cuke. I think the skin of slicing and pickling cukes is more likely to be bitter than the skin of burpless or English cukes.

Re: Cucumbers!
I think the bitterness is from the cucumber sitting on the vine too long. Atleast that is what I have been told, anyone else hear of that?

Re: Cucumbers!
My cukes are just now coming on and in abundance! I planted "Eureka" a type than can be used small (like gherkins) or for eating when they're larger. I'm going to make some French Cornichons and some others types too. Cornichons are a type sour pickle made with white wine vinegar, tarragon and garlic. From the looks of of the bloom, I'm going to have enough to give away as gifts too!

Holy Cumcumbers!
Wow, those look sooooo yummy! Great job!
I'm waiting for mine to start producing. I killed half the plant though :o( I was loosening the soil to add some bloodmeal & accidently disturbed the roots :o( so I ended up having to cut away half the plant :o(:::::::::::::::::::::
Oh well, live & learn! I'm hoping the remaining half will jump ahead. Hoping.....
Hey, I found rather a lot of ants making themselves at home though. They are all over the cucumber & squash plants. Is that ok? Or should I be trying to get rid of them? If so, any suggestions?

Wow, what beauties. I'm still waiting on mine.
I read that you should harvest them smaller than you think they should be so they don't stop production and go to seed instead.
If they start to yellow at all, that's too long on the vine.
The bitterness is probably because they were picked later than necessary.

Vanter holy cukes!
I think the ants are ok and they don't seem to bother my cukes at all as you can see ! they are very juicy and full of flavor, this is the first time I have grown them, but I read somewhere that the ants help erate the soil. They don't seem to be bothering or bringing any other pest so I think they are ok, by the way, if they become a problem maybe your gorilla friend can help? ha. Hope you have a bumper crop!

Yeah I read that too in Mel's new cookbook, thanks for the advice, mine are still going ! made some awesome gazpacho the other night , my guys loved it which I was really surprised, I think they are starting to see the value of the garden. Hope you have a good harvest as well.

The ants help with pollination. Leave them be.

Re: Cucumbers!
I only have two cucumber plants, so not enough cucumbers for me to get any.
(I'm sure all of you know by now that my husband is the chef at our restaurant, and is such a meanie he won't let me eat the produce - just because I grew it for the restaurant...harrumph.)

What a meanie!! I have only two cucumber plants also. There tons of blooms on them, though I've only harvested two so far. All I want is one little batch of pickles.... puh-lease!!!!
Re: Cucumbers!
Martha I have a ton of Boston Picklers and some other regular cukes coming on with a vengeance. So if you would like some come on down I will gladly share. Next time I drive by Acton I'll throw some to you

Ants & bitter cukes
Any time I see lots of ants on a garden plant I check very carefully to see if I have an aphid infestation. Ants "herd" aphids for the honeydew they secrete, so while the ants themselves may pose no threat they will help protect aphids which do. If you have no aphids, then I wouldn't worry about the ants.
Summer heat will turn cukes bitter here. I've found that Yamato variety withstands the heat better than some varieties, and last year I planted Green Serpent Metki melons as a substitute for cukes. They look like cukes, taste like cukes, but are actually a melon and withstand heat better. This year I added Painted Serpent Metki melons, too, but neither Metki vine nor my burpless cuke in Mel's Mix has done well for me this year. My neighbor gave me enough cukes to make a batch of pickle relish this week or I'd be completely out.
