6.5 lbs of Yukon Gold potatoes Empty Yukon Golds

Post  Furbalsmom 6/27/2010, 4:59 pm

Josh, when did you plant your yukon Golds and did you buy seed potatoes or did you cut sections with eyes off of sprouting potatoes?

I would like to grow just a few to try potatoes. I can build a box frame to go over the potatoes to allow for greater depth and more layers of MM. I want to try Purple, Yukon Gold and Red skinned potatoes and thought I would try cuttings off of sprouted potatoes.

Any specoal tricks required??

Thanks, I really enjoy watching your various projects.

Very cool, Josh - that's a great harvest.

I'm curious............do you plant all of your potatoes at one time? I notice you have a few boxes of them. How do you store them?

What will you put into the squares now that they're empty? Can you get another potato crop yet this year?

thanks

6.5 lbs of Yukon Gold potatoes Empty Yukon Gold problems?

Post  ander217 6/28/2010, 8:22 am

Josh, we harvested our Yukon Golds last week and discovered that many of them have huge dark spots or hollows in the centers that have to be cut away. I don't think we live that far from you, and I was wondering if you noticed this problem with yours? Our Red Pontiacs are fine, so we're thinking it must be something unique to the Yukon Golds. This was our first year for growing those (and it may be our last.) We've never had that problem before with Red Pontiac or White Cobbler potatoes.

6.5 lbs of Yukon Gold potatoes Empty What's your secret?

Post  quiltbea 6/28/2010, 2:55 pm

Josh, you amaze me. For one so young your are very knowledgable. You must be one of those folks who are born with an inate sense of growing things.

I grew Golden Russets and Kennebecs last year but the results weren't as good as I expected so I passed on them this year. I must admit the taste was superb, but not enough yield to make me happy.

What's your secret? What is in your soil?

Post  Josh 6/28/2010, 8:45 pm

new2this we used a 3 x 6 sfg just for potatoes this year and we planted 6 squares of russets 6 squares of red and 6 squares 6 squares of Yukon gold and we planted them all at the same time on St. Patrick's Day. I planted one square in my garden and that was later and I harvested them already. We are going to wait to harvest the others, but we wanted some to cook with the green beans now. My dad says we are going to go ahead and plant a second crop of them in those empty squares and see what we get.

Ander217 we found two yukon potatoes that had rotten spots on the outside when we were digging them up,we haven't cut any open yet,if we find some bad ones I'll let you know.

quiltbee I made the mix for the potato sfg and we were running low on compost and I added a large amount of rabbit compost and lots of last years composted leaves to the mix,and when we filled the high rise up I used lots of the composted leaves.

Cool! I just planted my yukon golds on Friday. It took me forever to get to the store to buy the starters. Last year I left them growing too long and first snow killed them (they were in a pot, not the ground). By the time snow cleared and I dug them they were rotting. oops. I'll be sure to dedicate some bunny poo to them!!!

Thanks Josh! You're awesome~!
