N-Rich Compost OK? Empty N-Rich Compost OK?

Post  Cross_stitcher 3/12/2010, 5:56 am

I've been composting for years but emptied our entire load onto our row garden last month. We made our first SFG (table top style) yesterday. Now we need compost and I found this product at Home Depot: Kellogg's N-rich Soil Enriching Compost. The label indicates it's a blend of kelp meal, worm castings, bat guano, chicken manure and 'natural forest products'. Would this satisfy Mel's recommendation that a SFG include 5 kinds of compost? I'd appreciate some timely responses from experienced SFGers since my first SFG is on hold until this question is decided! Many thanks!

"It sounds like a wonderful product. It will solve all our compost mixing problems. SFG gardeners have been waiting for a product like this for years." N-Rich Compost OK? Icon_wink

Not really, just having fun. If you had mixed all the ingredients yourself (five equal parts more or less), I'd say you have some great compost. I'm very skeptical of manufactured compost. You can be sure that the ingredient that fills most of the bag is the one that is cheapest. The more expensive an ingredient is, the less that is used. If it were me, I would mix it with several other pure composts to be on the safe side.

N-Rich Compost OK? Empty N-Rich blended compost

Post  Cross_stitcher 3/15/2010, 11:11 pm

Boffer, I appreciate your humor. But my question is sincere. Has anyone experimented with this compost? I did a web search and found a trade organization the "Mulch and Soil Council". To quote them, "Certified Products are new listings of mulch or soil product labels that have passed inspection for product terminology, compliance with labeling guidelines, content verification, label claims verification, weights & measures inspection and either CCA testing (mulch) or greenhouse growth testing (soils). Certified products are eligible to use the MSC Certification Logo for one year from the date of approval and must pass random audit inspections during that year to qualify for certification renewal."

I understand that a trade organizations are often formed to promote members' products, Yet they have only certified five different brands of compost -- two mushrooms, two all purpose and N-Rich.

It's listed on the site as a landscape soil. Here's the link: http://www.mulchandsoilcouncil.org/

Thanks for your feedback.
