Well, I tried to grow radishes under the huge leaves of my zucchini and they are very leggy with no radish on them. I don't think they like it at all.

I noticed on another post someone failed with carrots too. Did anyone try anything else?

Zucchini provides so much shade I doubt anything will grow under them. Early in the season, I sowed lettuce around the perimeter of nine squares and when the weather was warmer planted zucchini in the middle. But the zucchini very quickly took over the whole shebang. That's just the nature of the beast.

I have got onion sets going under all of my squash/curcurbits, but I don't necessarily expect them to mature. I'll take what greens / green onions I can get, though!

I failed with carrots & onions. The squash grew way too fast & too much shade.

I tried radishes with the same result. I was mainly planting for insect deterrent so I am not disappointed. Perhaps ferns or hostas? LOL/

I planted lettuce right around the Zucchini. Next week more lettuce in the surrounding squares. As it grew, I emptied the squares around it.

I still underestimated the size of that plant...

My radishes are too leggy now as well. I guess it's the heat, not the amount of sun.

Mine are under-planted with.... lawn. I think the reason only corn and pole beans grow well with squash is because they are so much taller and started at the same time. The squash becomes living mulch.

I don't much like zucchini but a friend gave me two starts and a few flowers because I gave her my extra asparagus roots. I have an isolation row (yep, said row, but wait, there’s more) of tomatoes that I did not start myself. My squash, cucumbers and pumpkins are also growing there. Everything has its own large black rubber pot. In early summer (if summer ever comes to the PNW, I think it is scheduled for July 17), I can still move pots when they need room to spread. They will go under the raspberries and the espaliered apple as living mulch for those.

I know that doesn't help you if you have your babies already growing strong in your SFG, but there is always next year.

Years ago I read of a place in Berkley where students were attempting to grow enough food on an urban lot to feed themselves (a radical idea in the 70's) They were innovators with growing squash and cucumbers up a tent shaped trellis (and back down the other side) making a shaded space under the living tent for lettuce. Seems like they thought it got too dark for lettuce at the height of the squash season but worked for a while.

Post  sbeach 6/17/2010, 11:27 am

Is it ok to prune a zucchini plant? Can I remove some of the leaves that are taking over some of the other squares so my basil and cabbage and lettuce and spinach and beans will get some sun? Will this hurt the plants or interfere with their ability to produce fruit?

It's been 20 years since I last tried growing zukes, and I forgot how much space they really take! Unfortunately, I gave them only 1.5' by 1' for each one at the end of 2 of my 3' by 6' boxes, thinking that they would hang over the edges, but they are muscling in on my slower veggies' spaces...

On another zuke topic, has anyone cooked the blossoms? I've heard they're very good, and as soon as there are any, I'd like to try cooking some. Any recipes? Hints?

Thanks everyone!

Stuffed with a mushroom/rice (sometimes sausage) and lite batter fried is good.

That does sound good! Looking forward to my squash getting to the point that I can harvest some of the blossoms. (I planted from seed about two weeks ago - we're just starting to see the true leaves come out. I'm using containers for one zucchini, one yellow summer squash, one buttercup (winter) and three kinds of pumpkin.

I also read in Celia Brooks Brown's book (I had posted about it HERE) about a gentleman who was admiring her allotment garden, and he asked her for some of the squash blossoms AND LEAVES... She has a recipe to use the squash leaves! I'll post it when I get home tonight, along with the story she tells. So, apparently, it's okay to prune some of the leaves from the plant! (I wouldn't go overboard, but hey - it's squash - it'll grow more!)

I am wondering the same about zucchini leaves. Does anyone know if the plant will suffer if you clip a leaf or two? Or if it makes them more vulnerable to pests?

I cut a lot of leaves off last year when I was trying to get mine to grow vertically. They didn't produce very well but then they were in my non-producing mud garden. The cuts didn't seem to affect them.

This year, I have pruned off a leaf or two from each of my three plants. We don't get those nasty worm things that eat the zucchini. My plants this year do not seem affected and all have squash on them.

I cut off the leaves because.... two had fungus, one bugged me -- it was just laying in the soil and getting in the way of watering.

Will keep you posted as to any future affects but so far removing a few leaves have not slowed them down.

Last year, I planted my zuchs way too close together and they became man eating monsters. I trimmed those things back quite a bit, and they still produced like mad! They were hanging over the edge of my SFG and killing the lawn, so I mostly trimmed the edges.

I like the way you write. I am so happy that you are a woman (or the man eaters would have ate you)

I really don't care for zucchini. I have it because a friend gave me a couple of plants. They have a bucket of Mel's mix because when she comes to my garden for tea I should really show her how they are doing.

We have trash for lawn, so I am happy to hear that they kill the lawn and I can blame it on the man eating monsters rather then not really caring as long as I get some compost fodder (but not too much)

Deborah.... who really wants to thank Wyldflower for the link. I'm gonna try those stuffed leaves and maybe conquer the beast.

Since my Zucchini is trying to take over my SFG, I was wondering if I could transplant it to a new location out of the box?

Any ideas?

Tks!

I think you will kill it if you do that.
