Back to the bats.....
Back to the thread about bats.....
We found this lovely "hanging out" in my kitchen about a week ago. We get them in the house frequently during the summer, especially after it rains. This is # 8 or 9. My husband has become quite adept at catching them. We put them out on a bush or log. They usually fly away quickly. There's obvisiously a colony around here somewhere. We see them evey evening about dusk. Still have mosquitos though, rats.......

Hip Hip Hurray!! I really wish I had some at my house! If you want to try to find where they live, look on the ground for their droppings (guano). And if you find some, put it on your rose bushes.

Re: Back to the bats.....
I am so happy to hear you have bats! The colonies around me have been decimated. I thought I saw one the other night, but not too sure, may have been a small owl.
Re: Back to the bats.....
So cool. I know we must have bats around us or at least we did about 5 years ago. One of my dogs caught one. I was not happy. Bats are great and the little browns are endangered.
I was able to make the dog leave it but it was limping around. I brought the dog in, went to the shed to get a shovel, but when I got back it was gone. I hope it was able to recoup and fly off.

Absolutely devastating!
I feel gutted. This is a terrible loss to our ecosystem in the North East region of the US.

Oh, I'm jealous -- I wouldn't mind a few bats around at all, even in the house. When I lived at my last place, I used to sit outside on the porch in the evenings and watch the bats at work -- a really lovely sight. Haven't seen any since moving here and am not sure the neighbours would be pleased at my putting up a bat house.

Oh camprn, this is devastating. I knew it was bad, but I didn't know little browns were so affected! I hope they come up with something soon. I know many caves are now closed to tourists during hibernation months to prevent the spread. Just heartbreaking!

Re: Back to the bats.....
Seems odd to have so many bats entering your house. They like attics during the snow-free season as maternal roosts.....are they by chance using your attic?
Maternal roosts have a distinct "mouse-y" odour that tend to make the upstairs rooms in an occupied house have a sweet musty smell. The bat poop is small like mouse poop and tends to pile up on the floor of the attic. A quick peek into the attic may reveal the tell tale smell and little piles of poop. The bats can sometimes be heard scratching and squeaking through the ceilings of the upstairs rooms.
Watch around the edge of your roof at dusk for bats exiting the attic through an eavestrough or fashia....they will start lining up and dropping out into flight.
Maternal roosts are where the female bats gather to raise young. They are warm and dry. They are only occupied during the summer / snow-free season. The bats usually leave late August / early September to head to 'swarming areas' for breeding and then to overwinter in mines or caves.
If you don't like having the bats in your attic you can seal up the entrance holes in the fall so they can't return the following spring. If there is a lot of bat poop you should wear a mask while cleaning it up as some of the molds that grow on it can cause lung infections. Or even better hire a bat expert to clean up and seal the attic up for you.
If you don't mind sharing your house with the bats, that's ok and safe if you stay out of the attic. Just try to find where they are getting from the attic into the main part of the house and seal up those areas. It could be through duct work / celing vents or around ceiling light fixtures, they can squeeze through very small holes/openings.

Hey Bulfrogbabe! How does your garden grow? Thanks for the tips about bats, very helpful info!
Back to the bats . . .
We have them in the woods where I live. When I walk my dogs at dusk, I frequently see them. They give us a wide berth, LOL! I'm glad to know they're out there.

Re: Back to the bats.....
We frequently see bats flying past our covered porch around twilight. They roost in a nearby shop building that is not in great repair. Never see them leave that building in the evenings, but have seen the guano on the floor and machinery. Hope they eat lots of detrimental bugs. Don't know what kind of bats they are, guess I should find out. Another project in the works.

Yes! It's very high nitrogen, so you would treat it as a green and make sure it's thoroughly composted before applying to your plants.

Bat guano is excellent in the garden. In some parts of the world farmers will hunt out bat caves and dig out the guano to be added to their fields. I have seen a few ads in a garden magazine for it as well.
As far as the bat die off there is a lot of information on Google about the problem. My daughters Cave Club (Virginia Tech) as well as many other reputable cave clubs through out the U.S. suspended caving for a period of time and now sanitize all of their climbing/caving gear before entering and after exiting a cave to help prevent the spread of bat "White Nose Syndrome".
God Bless, Ward and Mary.
