Was there supposed to be a link to an article for us to read?

Nope, just a random thought.

Not really, no. If we're turning people out of their houses because we need the ground to grow food, forcing them to live on the street or in highrise apartment blocks, bunched up like sardines in a can, how's that progress?
I'd rather take a smaller plot and build some high yield greenhouses on it, producing 10-20 times the crop that those gardens could produce, and let those people live in their houses (maybe giving them some gardening lessons and hoping they will take to growing part of their own food in the process).

Our town has finally decided the empty ugly lot can be leased to a man whose calling himself sustainable sterling (our town name).
He is offering free garden plots for this year, have as many as you want. He got the vfw to donate a flagpole, the medicine man will do a prayer over it and hospice wants him to create a healing circle in the center.
It really sounds great.
And his first priority seniors & disabled and tabletop sfg.
All leftover and such will go into the compost, only water by drip irrigation and hand no sprinklers, no herbicides or pesticides.
I am hoping it goes well and he decides to do the entire thing sfg and just rent out the plots to recoup those costs.

That's great, aspie! Every time I see an empty lot I think about the documentary about The Garden.

Last time I was in Chicago, I was amazed to see how many rooftop gardens were appearing (I was in one of the taller hotels, so I could see a lot of roofs!)
Wouldn't it be awesome if we could spread the word that people can have gardens on their balconies and rooftops?
I've also read articles saying that when neighborhoods take over and grow things on vacant lots, crime tends to fall, as the neighbors meet each other and as a group have something to nurture and protect.
Good stuff.

I love this idea, and Victory or War Gardens. I spoke to a friend and he said when he was in the military, folks had gardens every where. People were involved in the community gardens like you said, therefore getting to know each other and basically forming neighborhood watch there, just by having a relationship with them. My friend also said they had chickens I know some townships and cities still allow for hens only.
I have a wiki link on them and part of it says during the time we had victory gardens, those gardens produced 40 percent of our produce, bringing down the cost of food for our troops
Victory/ War Gardens
I know someone else on here has one of her beds name Victory Garden, Ive name my garden The Victory Garden, I think its happening we will take over the world with our veggies :-D Has the oxygen gone to my head?
I just want everyone to have food.
