First Year Asparagus?? Empty First Year Asparagus??

Post  aliciazim 5/27/2010, 10:18 pm

Hello everyone - we are new to square foot gardening and it has been several years since we tried growing vegetables. We have 6 boxes and we have lots of nice young plants!

We bought asparagus plants from the greenhouse last week, and have been watering every day since they were planted. They didn't even look like plants, they were more like a root system in a burlap bag. Well today we looked and guess what?? They are starting to sprout already! There are a few tiny little sprouts that actually look like asparagus!! (you experienced gardeners stop laughing now! First Year Asparagus?? Icon_rolleyes )

The label said that it is recommended that we don't harvest them the first year. So the question is -- what do we do with the cute little sprouts? Do we snip them off, or just the opposite - does "don't harvest" mean just let them grow and grow?

Thanks for any advice -- we are loving the SFG thing so far.

Let them grow -- they feed the roots. The reason for not cutting the first year is to allow them to nurture the roots. Next year you can cut for two weeks and let the rest grow, and from then on any that are as large as a pencil. Asparagus takes patience, but is well worth it!

Thank you for your replies. As hard as it will be, I will let them grow and not cut them.

I am new to asparagus planting too. I have 3 tiny little spears sprouting in my new asparagus box. I am glad you asked this question, because I didn't know what to do with them either. I will leave them be and just watch them grow. Very Happy

Sounds good. You just have to be patient with asparagus. Actually, mine are in their 2nd year but none of the spears were finger-sized so I left them alone and didn't harvest even one again this year. Hopefully next year I can harvest some for a few weeks.

Let the fronds grow, they will feed the roots for next yr. After the foilage gets grown, you can cut off the top 6 inches. This will force the plants to get bushier and healthier.

In the southern US, after the sprouts get finger size, they can be cut for several weeks in the spring, then, the foilage can be cut to the ground in late summer, for another round of spears in the fall.

I am getting ready to plants asparagus, too. I plan on using Mel's method in his book. I've haven't taken the 'roots' out of the bag yet to actually see how this process will work. Is this how everyone plants their asparagus??

Thanks!

our new asparagus never came up Sad .....first year trying to grow them.....we planted 6 of them.....2 jersey knights....2 mary wa.....2 purple somethings.....

its been at least a month now....Shocked

we soaked them

we put them down like 8 inch *i think* will have to aske hubby

put them in a trench on top of a mound

filled the trench in until it only cover a couplie of inch's....leaving room to hill up more around them as they were to grow.....

do you think they will show up next spring?

Rose, what is your weather like there? Still cold? If it's warm, dig them up(by hand) and see if any roots are growing or if you can see a sprout or anything. They should come up this yr!! If nothing,I'd dig and take back to store.

I think you'll know. Probably be new, white root hairs. It may just be too cool for them to come up at night. The tips of spears, if they are starting will be white, since they are under the dirt. If you find 1 that is growing, then we just need to be patient.

I have a hard time with the different weather zones, but try to help if I can. Mine is already cut for this spring and growing it's ferns. It was in the 80's today.

I planted 18 crowns this spring. I planted 6" deep in southern Wisconsin and it took about a month for the first spear to emerge from the first crown. Some crowns took as much as 6 weeks, but now they're all ferned out and I've got 20-25 stalks, with more occasionally poking through. Given your weather I'd just wait more. Also if you've got a thermometer that can be stuck into the soil 4 or 5 inches, take the temperature of the soil, because that's what matters.

This is my first year growing asparagus too, but since it's not a fruit, I'd leave it alone. Taking fruit off new perennials can increase future harvests(though I normally don't do that either...those strawberries looked too tasty).

Yes, the feathery foliage is the asparagus. Congrats!

Shocked REALY???? Shocked

wow that took them a loooong time to show up :drunken:

i only see two so far.....we planted six crowns

i hope they will all come up and are able to get up and around our cucumbers.....

is there still a chance they will show next spring if we dont see all of the this year?

im glad hubby didnt pull them out.....he thought they were weeds....the first one that is feather like was a really, really skinny thing that came up.....i remember that asparagus looked feather/fern like so i said leave it just in case it is the asparagus....i didnt have my hopes up because it had been months on months since we planted those crowns....then....we found one that is still thin....but it looked like an asparagus .....i was so hoping it was...and they are just late bloomers.......im so happy!!

i forget who told me before to just leave them in the ground and that they may show up next spring.....that they maybe working hard underground on theri root system......THANK YOU to who ever told me that!!

hugs

Asparagus is a perennial and remains in the ground. It can take up to 3 years from planting crowns to a first harvest. Most asparagus beds that I know of are well and good for 15-20 years before needing to be reworked.
