Why are my radishes splitting? Empty Why are my radishes splitting?

I looked down at my pretty batch of radishes with their bright pink selves poking up through Mel's mix and noticed that one of them was split, so I pulled it out. It wasn't all that big - maybe an inch - so I pulled out a few others that were even bigger. Of the 4 I pulled out, 2 had splits in them. What am I doing wrong? Can I save the rest of them?

Help!

Howey: The easy answer is - you and your plants are OK. I have some radishes each year split. I never have figured out why. They all taste the same though.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

If they went through a dry spell during the growing season and then got more water later on in the growing season (especially nearing maturity) this can cause them to split I believe.

I agree with Kemp. I was reading the book today about carrots and it said to hold back on the watering towards maturity so they don't crack. I'm guessing the same can be true for radishes?
