I know what a hornworm is now - Page 2 Empty Can I just say....

Post  middlemamma 6/30/2010, 2:00 pm

This post made me wonder if I am cut out for this gardening gig.

This being my first year....now I am wondering. One of the things I love about living here in Idaho as opposed to the other two places I have lived in my life are the lack of bugs. Living 18 years in Southern California with waterbugs (cockroaches) and potato bugs (AKA baby face bugs-these BTW are why I believe WHOLE HEARTEDLY in alien life) and living 13 years in Northen Arizona with scorpions and grasshoppers of epic porportions, (no tarantulas NEVER bothered me...they EAT the other bugs I hated so I would catch ever one I saw and give it a home in my crawlspace...never had a bug in my house because I did that).

I have visited the midwest and the south a couple times in my life in the summer months and I can honestly say that the bugs alone would keep me from EVER living in either place. This post confirms that sentiment.

This city girl gone country hopes she never EVER sees a WORM that big and ugly cause I would have a coronary at the ripe ole age of 33. GAG!

If ya'll had to save those plant babies from the ravaging worm you would, this is what I would do, (have it planned when none of my worm pickers are around) I will take the scissors and cut the leave off he is eating :-D into a bucket and fling it to the chickens. I can tell you I will be screaming and be totally grossed out at the same time. And that guy in the video let it crawl all over him. icko picko man !!!

We had one tomatoe plant that had obviously fallen victim to the big nasty green worm but for the life of me I never did find it, I am thinking the guineas must have eaten it! And since that one I havent seen any more evidence.
Last year they were terrible and I like so many others use my harvesting scissors and cut it in two. Just dont get the green slimy guts on you when the squirt out

I know what a hornworm is now - Page 2 Empty Tobacco worms

Post  ander217 6/30/2010, 5:10 pm

Y'all are such wimps. I rip the beggars off the limb with my bare hands, slam them to the ground, and stomp the ever-lovin' life out of them, laughing maniacally all the while. I know what a hornworm is now - Page 2 Icon_twisted

BTW, the hornworm in the plastic bag in the photo is a tobacco hornworm. It has a red horn and straight slashes on the side, rather than the black horn and angled slashes of the tomato hornworm.

Post  ander217 6/30/2010, 6:46 pm

Blood? Fractures? Gashes?...I don't feel so well. Just thinking about them makes me woozey. Give me a nice, fat, juicy worm any day.

Good thing I'm married to an ICU nurse. He always took care of the kids' boo-boos while I picked up the snakes.

I know what a hornworm is now - Page 2 Empty Certified Athletic Trainer

Post  chocolatepop 6/30/2010, 6:53 pm

Ha, I'm an athletic trainer (NOT personal trainer) at a local high school, so I get all the fun stuff from sports ranging from football to lacrosse, rugby to cheerleading.

I'm always getting knocks on my door cause some kid in the neighborhood hurt themselves.
But I also feel like a proud mama bear when the kids so something extraordinary. I have one former athlete who was just accepted to law school and another to medical!
