Hi
I'm square footing for the first time this year. I bought onion sets and planted them 16 to the square which seems to be reccommended in the ANSFQG book. I also sowed from seed some very fetching-looking North Holland Blood Red onion. They are said to be easy spring or bulbing onion so I put those in at 16 to the square too. Only I'm thinking now that for spring onions they might have been closer? How many spring onions do you get to the square foot?
PS Not sure what you call spring onions but they are the ones you use raw, sort of pencil thickness usually.
Appreciate any advice about them.

Yes---I would have gone closer if you just wanted them for "green onions" rather than slicing onions. But that is just me Smile

I did not know this my first year either Ice, but a spring onion is planted in the fall. I could be all wet though, we call them overwinter onions in the PNW.

Really? This seed packet says sow Feb-Jul and harvest Apr-Oct.
Nothing over winters here in the veg garden. I tried purple sprouting broccoli one year and it looked great until Christmas and then lay down and died Onion question Icon_cry so I went back to buying calebrese plants.
This year I got seed for something called (stem) Kalibroc F1 which looks like green sprouting broccoli but seems to grow in one season (she says hopefully).

I tried spring onions / scallions from seed this spring, and they didn't grow, as far as I can tell. Maybe I planted them too early... is it too late to try again?

it is not too late to plant them again. My scallions take a long, long time to sprout, and then a pretty long time to grow.

Regarding spacing, I think 16 plants is the maximum that Mel recommends, but if you plant more and it works, then plant away!
