Hello from AZ at 7000 ft
New member and a novice gardener. Anyone with knowledge of or experience in SFG in the Flagstaff area? The local nursery says we have a 90-day growing season (I'm new to AZ). I am without a greenhouse, a short growing season and headwinds that blow through mountain passes and funnel right through our plot of land more frequently than I'd like to say. Any suggestion, recommendation and/or help will be more than welcomed.

A warm welcome from Ohio! I can't offer much help with gardening in Flagstaff, since my only experience with that area is being stranded there several times in snow storms. That, and driving through it with our RV on I-40 - that is usually an experience all its own!

Gahollie, from Redding, CA. Sounds like you have some real challenges ahead. Good luck. I wish I could help, but I've never gardened in your area. Hopefully someone who can help will come along soon.

Welcome to the Forum from Central CA.
Flagstaff is a very nice area of AZ but, surprisingly, it does have a shorter growing season. Erecting frames over the beds and covering with 4 mil plastic would help extend the growing season about a month in and a month out, temperature wise. You would have to open them early in the morning so the plants in the spring and fall won't fry! Erecting vertical support and attaching a permeable fabric such as burlap, Home Depot sun shade, can provide a partial wind break for the beds. Check with your local agriculture extension/Master Gardener for growing hints in your area.
I have frames over my beds year around so I can cover with what ever material is needed at that time of the year. I also made a 4'x4' mini green house to overwinter some summer plants. Yes, this area is year around gardening, but sun shade in the summer, 4 mil plastic during hard freezes, and bridal tulle over certain plants in the cabbage family to keep off the white butterfly and her green caterpillars.
