Where to purchase rare tomato plants Empty Where to purchase rare tomato plants

Post  chocolatepop 5/20/2010, 9:40 am

online?

I lost about 90% of my large stash of plants. I'm still in shock because all these plants were going to be sold as produce at the farmers market for funding of an extremely important endeavor. I started them all from seeds back in march, and most were quite rare/heirloom so that was to be the attraction over the standard tomatoes.

help before I go nuts.

There isnt much around us I can purchase speciality other that silly old box stores in which I'll be like everyone else at the farmers market.

Washington State University has an extension facility near us. I believe it's the Ag Dept. that has plants for sale every spring. That's where we get different heirloom plants to try. Any Ag colleges in your area to call?

This nursery was recommended by several folks on another forum:

Here's a thread on the gardenweb forums that might help:

I'm so sorry to hear you lost so many of your 'babies'.

I was browsing Territorial Seeds last night and they have live plants available, including HEIRLOOM varieties.

Hope all goes well and you find what you need.

we're ok, house=over all ok. master bedroom we were renovating, well, needs re=renovating, drywall, windows, shower, ceiling, wood flooring, etc, as well as the attached bath and closet, everything in it, all upper level rooms need a clean up. carpet, walls, all cloth in the closet is being taken and cleaned.

I know its "just plants" but this was going to be how we would financially make ends meet over the summer and into the fall Sad

My heart goes out to you....I am so sorry.

Is there anyway to get reimbursement through your insurance for profits lost? I will hope something good happens in the way of your claim. I don't think anyone here thinks it's "just plant's"... You and your family will be in my thoughts.

When do you need them by? I have seeds of various heirloom types of different color and sizes. If you need them I can send them. I have a thread https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/seed-exchange-and-growing-info-f29/seeds-anyone-t2283.htm#16080 any seeds you'd like, let me know and how many you need. I have no idea how to send live plants...

Where to purchase rare tomato plants Empty Rare tomatoes

Post  ander217 5/20/2010, 6:40 pm

Chocolatepop, I'm so sorry to hear about the fire. Glad no one was injured.

For plants, heirloomtomatoplants.com ships plants all through the year, but the plants cost around $5-$7 each in 4" pots plus shipping. I have no experience with this company, just read about them online.

www.totallytomatoes.com - they have many of the seed varieties you mentioned. They also sell plants, but their website says their last shipping date is May 15. They had three late varieties that appeared to be still available. If you contact them and tell them your story, they might make an exception for other varieties too, if they have any plants left. Their plants sell for around $6 each. I have ordered seeds from them.

Rareseeds.com is another good source for seeds. I've purchased many seeds from them - I like doing business with them.

Does anyone know if it's legal to root suckers from purchased tomato plants? I'm assuming it would be okay if they are open-pollinated varieties. If so, you may be able to buy one plant, and then root several branches and suckers from it, thereby reducing costs and getting a jumpstart on time.

I too am sorry to hear about the fire. I wish I could send you plants, but they wouldn't survive the trip. I do have a pack of mixed heirloom tomato seed from wintersown.org. If it's not too late for you to plant seed, I'd be glad to send them. Just a thought -- why don't you contact wintersown.org and tell them your story and see if any of the members there are close to you and can help.

You guys are making me cry! Seriously!!!! I appreciate the offers more than you guys could even begin to imagine.

I've found a few of the speciality tomatoes locally at a small small small ma and pa place I've shopped in the past and she said she promised to save some for me once money is settled. We've worked together before and was actually the one who got me into rare and heirloom seeds.

I have several seeds, but just not the time to start over Sad I mean some things like the melons and such won't be a problem, but others are a loss.

My husband and i have been all over getting things to make it through, like new toiletries and such. and the air purifyer has been running non stop all day so most of the house smells ok, until you walk into the room were the damage occurred. I wonder if they thing I was growing pot Where to purchase rare tomato plants Icon_razz

I'm sooo sorry to hear this! Where to purchase rare tomato plants Icon_sad It's upsetting enough to have your house damaged, but this just adds insult to injury. I got my heirloom seeds from Seed Savers. Maybe they sell plants as well, I'm not sure. Worth a look. I also found some nice heirloom varieties at a local nursery here. Maybe call around and see if any local places around you might have some. I hope you find some!
