Post  LilBittyBean on 8/8/2019, 8:20 am

Good morning and hello! Been a fan of Mel's since applying his methods in my garden in San Diego. When I moved back home to New Orleans, I wished I could pick up that garden and take it with me!  Well, it's been 5 years since the move and I have finally decided to plant my SFG!

So glad to have found this forum!   happy hi

Thanks for the warm welcome, AtlantaMarie! I've gotten started with carrots, head and leaf lettuces, rocket, tomatoes, bell peppers, chives, red Welsh bunching onion, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, and plenty of herbs.

Looking to put in a few hot peppers (tabasco and jalapeno), a zucchini, eggplant, chard, and some bush beans.

welcome Lil! What in the world is your avatar?  geek

We'd love to see some pics of your SFG setup. Sounds like a great mix of summer and winter crops. Most folks can't get away with that, but when Mother Nature cooperates, in our hot zones (I'm 9b) we can get away with it.  yahoo

Hey there, country! Thanks for the warm welcome!

My avatar is a cookie I made and decorated! (I'm a chef/baker/food blogger.) Looking forward to replacing that avatar with a shot of my garden bounty in a month or so!

My SFG is pretty simple: 3 4x4 beds and plenty of pots. Figured I would start out small and see how things work out for me. Will share some pics when I can. It's kinda ugly right now, what with the cardboard between the beds. I am trying to decide what to put down -- flagstones, stepping stones, maybe pea gravel. I should make a decision soon.

I'm in 9b, too! It's HOT, ain't it? About to get a couple showers here soon to make the garden happy.

We love before & after shots, so please take some "ugly" pics, even if you don't post them until you have some pretty ones to go with them.

Yup, same here, but we're actually having a very mild summer, compared to last year. affraid

I do have some ugly shots already for pesonal record-keeping, so I will do what you suggest and post before & after when things get rockin'.

I see you are in Redding. Last year was the awful drought and the Carr Fire, right?  I miss California in many ways, but I don't miss those wildfires one bit.

The worst of the Carr Fire was less than a mile from us. We had the fire tornado filling the entire sky and roaring so loud we couldn't hear each other from 3' away. We ran for our lives and were blocked from coming home for 10 days, but our home was spared. affraid

I'm so glad your lives and home were spared. I remember dumping items into the pool when the Witch Fire was headed towards us in '07. We had enough time to evacuate, and our house was spared. The neighborhood right behind us was not so fortunate. Completely gut-wrenching to see the aftermath.

It was several months before I could drive by the burned areas, and it still made me cry. Sad

Hey, hey! I feel like this time of the year is the "extra special growing time" as taught to me by my dear, sweet dad.  He was and is my garden inspiration. I grew up gathering pests and pulling weeds with him and both my grandperes. I was very lucky to live next door to my maternal grandparents and a mile from my paternal ones. The family, including great uncles and great aunts, all coordinated their growing efforts. Many of them are gone now, but memories of their terrific gardening live on. Too bad I was not smart enough to save all of their seeds. I do have a few select seeds from Dad, though.

Hi LBB,  Welcome to the Forum from central California!  glad you\'re here  I just visited NOLA in May, which, as it turned out, was a perfect time.  As we were flying out of the airport, the rain and thunder started.

There's no modesty here.  You can post the "ugly" beginning photos right now and add more as you progress. Wink This is your time to start a garden as many of us are hoping for fall harvest and then put the beds to sleep.

Hubby and I toured northern CA Jan 2-4 to see the devastation of the fires, including in CN's neighborhood. http://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t22522-sanderson-s-road-trip-in-northern-sacramento-vally-california

PS  First time I had a Po' boy. The bread was soft and flaky, so I could actually enjoy eating the whole thing! Hello from New Orleans Nola_p10

Thank you, sanderson! Checked on my "plant babies" this morning and they are looking happy.

I read through the thread of your visit to northern CA. Amazing how destructive and unpredictable wildfires can be. The only beautiful thing in the aftermath is the new life that springs forth from the scorched valleys. I've witnessed some awe-inspiring wildflower growth in the Laguna Mtns and Palomar Mtn areas after the Witch Creek and Cedar fires.

Nice shot of your po' boy! Looks like you got some Leidenheimer French bread there!
