Re: Update on Marie's mom
AWESOME, Marie. That is such good news.AtlantaMarie wrote:Hi Everyone. Talked to mom the last couple of days. The shot seems to be working. She's reporting about a 90% decrease in pain!! And she went driving yesterday without me being right behind her. She says she did fine, no problems. Yea....! Let's hope that continues!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Finally got hold of the scheduling folks on Friday. Turns out the doctor didn't put in his notes that mom had declined taking part in a clinical research trial. If you don't specifically say "no," then they assume you are. So mom's paperwork was sitting on someone's desk for review....
"Are you SURE she declined it?" "I was sitting right there..." Sigh....
So - mom's heart procedure is scheduled for October 8. Yea!!!
Her sister's procedure was on Thursday & went very well from what we understand. So now mom has some idea of what will be involved.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Morning. Mom's heart valve replacement is tomorrow sometime. We have to be there somewhere between 5:30-8:30 am (with a 2 hour drive). So I'll be going up this afternoon.
She'll be in the hospital for at least one night, two or three if they have to install a pacemaker. I'm planning to be there through the weekend, so will be mostly out of touch...

Re: Update on Marie's mom
to you and your mom. Katie has a pacemaker, so I know what you'll be going through on that part -- not too awful. Fingers crossed for both of you on the other. It's amazing that they can have her back home in such a short period of time.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Morning everyone. Mom's procedure went well. She has a temp pacemaker in, but as of last night they were not expecting to have to make it permanent. She'll be in at least until tomorrow. We'll know more later today.
Thank you for your prayers & well-wishes!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
That sounds like some positive news. Hoping for a speedy recovery for you mom!
Re: Update on Marie's mom
Thanks LBB!
Got there yesterday & they had removed the temp pacemaker. And she should be going home today. Woo-Hoo!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
She's home & doing fine. Kicked me out today... Was planning on staying thru the weekend...
Now that THAT'S taken care of we've got surgery #2 scheduled for Dec 10.
Once we got things kicked into high gear, we're moving along nicely now! LOL, it's times like these that she's glad I tend to be a bulldog & just shove things along... Don't mess with my momma!!!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Mom got a call from the hospital. Said her monitor was showing that she was in a-fib / bit of an irregular heartbeat. Changed up some meds right then & there that they wanted her to go on immediately.
I'm taking her down there on Tuesday so they can take a look. Wasn't TOO concerned about it. Gave me an opportunity to schedule later if I wanted... ??? No! Now, please!

Re: Update on Marie's mom
My a-fib was diagnosed back in 2000. Couldn't be shocked back into normal rhythm. I was given different medications to control things but I still have a-fib. Last visit I asked my doctor how much my life would be shortened by the a-fib. He said not at all because of the different medicines I am taking to control things.AtlantaMarie wrote:Mom got a call from the hospital. So having A-fib is not a problem for me if I continue on the medications.. But it is worrisome that it just occurred with your mother. Hopefully they can reverse the problem.

Marie, I hope the meds correct it quickly.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Met with the electrocardio guy this morning. Mom has a slight case of a-fib. He's got her on Eliquis. He's hoping to keep her on it, but she says that she's had a sore throat ever since starting it two weeks ago. Doesn't see giving her a pacemaker anytime in the foreseeable future. Yea!
He's cleared her to have the 2nd back epidural on time.
He wants to see her again in 6 months. Thankfully he comes up to her area once/month....

Re: Update on Marie's mom
As ya know we been gone since Mel passed. took me a while to find yall again thanks to face book I did. We care for you Marie and believe it or not you come up in conversation from tie to time. We did not know about your mom's troubles but will definitely add her to our prayer list.
Re: Update on Marie's mom
That's good she's on something to prevent blood clots that can result from the afib. There is a higher risk for strokes in persons suffering from afib. The meds are to prevent clots, not to treat your Mom's afib. To treat the cause rather than the effect, there is a procedure called an ablation that is performed by a cardiology sub-specialist called an Electrophysiologist. Performing a 3D electrophysiology study will reveal the electrical impulse tract responsible for the "misfiring" afib. The doctor can use this information to manipulate a specially equipped catheter inside a blood vessel to a specific area in the heart's wall and "zap" it away. I have two friends that have had the procedure and they no longer have afib.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Thanks, Cajun Cappy.... I appreciate that! We've really missed you around here!
Yardslave, interesting information. Thank you! My dad had a-fib, so I'm a LITTLE familiar with it.... But as his Alzheimer's took over, it became impossible for him to tell when he was having problems.
The electro-guy we met with yesterday thinks that the left branch was somehow damaged during the valve replacement. He doesn't see it coming back. The right branch is handling the load fine, but he has that same concern about strokes.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
I'm home. At least for a few days, lol! We go next week to see if the heart guys are going to release her.
The cost for the TAVR was $191,000 USD. And that's JUST the couple of days in for the TAVR itself. Thank goodness for insurance & Medicare.
We had an... interesting... conversation last night. I'm starting to find out just how much she doesn't remember from the last several months due to all the pain meds she's been on. Thankfully she's been able to get off of most of them.
She's getting another back epidural next Tuesday. Then Thursday to the heart guys.

Re: Update on Marie's mom
Thank goodness for insurance and Medicare. Will she have to keep getting epidurals or will things improve over time?
Re: Update on Marie's mom
HOPEFULLY this one will take care of the pain for 4-5 years. This is the 3rd time she's gone through them. They can give you up to 3. But with the narrowing of the spinal canal, I'm not sure how this one will do....
