mix of lettuce in one square
So where its just the two of us we always end up with too much lettuce maturing at once. I've tried really hard the past few seasons to stagger my plantings but we still ended up with too much.
Then it hit me this morning: Why do I think that all four plants in a square have to be the same lettuce? Instead of planting a square of romaine and another of bib, why not just one square with a couple of each? That way we can plant single squares at 2-4 week intervals and have both types without overdoing it.

Absolutely. No problem mixing 'n' matching. Just be aware of the sizes of each variety. If you just pick the outer leaves, you may be able to have 4/square and 2 squares would provide a nice variety.
Re: mix of lettuce in one square
My last attempt at growing individual lettuce resulted in a curly one being 19 inches across .
It wasn't bitter , it lasted till the first frost. We just kept taking off three or four leaves from the outside every other day & if the middle tried to run to a stalk we cut the stalk out.
Now I simply sow three 12 inch rows in a one foot square of mixed leaf cut & come again . Once they are up to say 4 inches tall , we cut up to six inches off along a row.
Doing it like that allows the rest of the three rows to become a cropping cycle

Funny, I was just on Pinterest seeing how to use all this lettuce!!! I do this every year???!!!
I love it, but with the spinach getting done and the Romaines and Marveille de Quatro Saisons (?) and Spotty Oak they are so lovely!
and tasty

I never get enough lettuce for us all to have a salad at the same time. But the tortoise and guinea pig are well fed! How many squares would you say need to be going for each person?

The standard rule of thumb is 10 lettuce plants per person, but I usually have double, or more, than that since we never get enough fresh lettuce. We grow Black Seeded Simpson, Romaine, and Grazion. We alternate harvesting leaves from each type.
