That would be normal for here but strangely there is no snow in the forecast for the next six days and only one overnight when we go below freezing.  Very Happy

Don't you love the first signs of life in the garden after a snowy winter.

I was hoping to get to 50 Winter Sowing containers. It's taken a while but I finally reached that number today. I expect it's a little late for the five containers I put out today.

I have Arugula that has sprouted in a container that was set out on April 3rd. Fifth Year SFG in Canada - Page 5 Img_2424

That's quite an impressive assortment. Say, in your spare time, can you come over and clean my beveled brick patio? Wink Yours looks great.

The frost goes down several feet here in the winter and it plays havoc with our patio even though there are 12 to 18 inches of crushed gravel and stone dust tamped down underneath the bricks. In places the bricks are pushed up several inches in winter and then slowly go back down in spring. But it's starting to look like the whole thing will have to be taken up and relevelled.

Some photos of onions, leeks, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers growing indoors under the lights. Also a sweet potato that I am trying to force to sprout in a container on the heating mat.  I need to do some pricking out and potting up.

It's been a cool, wet Spring but things are happening in the veggie garden. The rhubarb, strawberry plants and garlic are making a start. I found a nice big juicy worm under the straw in the strawberry bed.

Latest acquisition ... A used (once) Aerogarden Bounty LED with two unopened grow anything kits. Price $75 Canadian (56 USD). This will be a friend to my existing Aerogarden Ultra.

Just found out that the local coffee shop has closed.  They were always so good at providing me with coffee grounds and cardboard. I will have to find a new source for those things.

I am disappointed with my indoor sown tomato and pepper seedlings this year. I am using a ProMix BX potting mix (should be using MM).  The plants look stunted and not very healthy. I've been bottom watering (to help prevent damping off) but someone on another site suggested to another person that they should be top watering to get the nutrients in the mix down to the roots. I am going to pot up some of them in new mix and see what happens. Meanwhile outdoors the garlic is doing great.

Nothing's doing well for me. I've never seen so much bug/worm damage on kale and peas. Tomatoes are okay, but sluggish. Asparagus is coming along, but I expected more. It just seems to be a blah year for gardening. Sad

OK let's see if potting up a few tomatoes (10) and peppers (5) into bigger pots using ProMix Premium All Purpose Mix will make any difference.  Since I ran out of room under the lights I had to press the new Aerogarden into service to act as a grow light (no hydroponics).

The leeks and onions are doing well and will soon be ready to go out into the SFG.

TD, When do you usually plant the tomato, pepper, etc. seedlings? I was about 3 weeks late due to the weather.

I usually transplant them into the garden on our Victoria Day long weekend, which is next weekend.  I may start hardening them off (FWIW) in a few days and wait until end of May to transplant.

The following is not for All New SFG purists.

Last year I grew my potatoes in a lasagna garden bed that I converted to old style SFG.  They did great.  This year I am growing them in second year straw bales that I used last year in an experimental straw bale garden.  I added a grid (made from mini blinds) as this will become another old style (non-MM) bed. The potatoes are Yukon Gold.  The photo shows the chitted potatoes on top before being planted in holes in the straw. Let's see what happens.

I have one baby Sweet Potato slip that appeared today.  Very Happy
It's 21 days since I put the sweet potato in moist potting mix on a heat mat at around 80F. A root appeared about a week ago.

Nutz! I was gonna share mine so you could compare methods, but I never wrote down when I started it. I know it was before you started yours, but I don't remember how long. I'm guessing 1-2 weeks. Anyway, here it is today, with 4 babies ready to plant and a good, strong root system you can't see very well in the pic. They should go in the ground now, but we're expecting more bad weather, so they'll have to wait a few more days.
Fifth Year SFG in Canada - Page 5 Sweetp11
My biggest challenge has been watering. For some reason, the cats love drinking from this mug. This morning, the roots were exposed from the cats drinking it down so far.

Your way will probably work just as well. They start off slowly, then just explode with new growth. I'm sure I started mine a week or so before you.
