Thanks for the recommendation and the link. The mix I grew didn’t have those in there...the white ones and yellow ones were kinda bland tasting. Not sure what the red ones were, but not a repeater.OhioGardener wrote:Scorpio Rising wrote:Maybe it was a matter of. Yes, they are very sweet and tender. They were colorful and tasty in our Carrot & Apple Salad last evening, too! They are fast growers. I got the seed from Baker Creek Heirloom:
Purple Cosmic Carrot Seed
My wife says that the Cosmic Purple carrots are out of this world!

First frost for the season this morning, pretty well took care of the summer vegetable gardens. They were predicting low 40's for last night, and the threat of frost on Sunday, but it got cooler than they predicted. Today I'll be cleaning off the remaining beds and sowing the cover crops for the winter. Yesterday I blew the water out of the drip irrigation system, and closed it for the winter.

The Swan Song is playing, I am afraid. A matter of time for all of us. I hate it though when the prediction is wrong. I still have some lettuces and peppers going that could take a frost if they were covered, but if the forecast isn’t clean, I dont!
I might pick all peppers this weekend. Got my grandma’s recipe for pepper relish from my SIL...super yummy. And it gets a lot of peppers processed. Gonna make another Unstuffed Pepper Casserole or two. Will freeze one. It is delish. Zune’s ground turkey, very healthy.
Jalapeños shall be frozen, as will some regular bell peppers. Chili in the future!

Frost coming here (S/W Illinois) Mon night and Tue morning. I'll harvest the rest of my sweet potatoes today. (Will post pics). Also, will plant garlic around the end of the month.
No more sunshine here til Tue. Fall is a beautiful time of year but always depressing to me.

Cold here, actually turned my furnace on today. Will get out there tomorrow and finish pulling everything. Probably freeze a bunch of peppers, since I will be swimming in them. (Which I love!). Have a 7# turkey breast thawing now, so the oven will help heat the house tomorrow!
Not sure how many if any green tomatoes I have, but could make another relish...but the pepper relish takes some green maters too.

Finished putting up all of the peppers today. Made a couple Sweet Banana Pepper Casseroles, divided them into servings, and froze for later meals. Cut up and froze the rest of the Banana Peppers. Made 2 dozen Stuffed Bell Peppers, individually wrapped and froze them. Made a pot of Stuffed Bell Pepper Soup to freeze later. Canned 24 pints of Pickled Jalapeno Peppers, and made a few end of the season Jalapeno Poppers as a special treat. It is sad to know it is the end of the season for summer vegetables, but it is nice knowing that we had such a bountiful crop of everything this year. We have enough canned and frozen vegetables to get us through the winter and until next years plants start producing.

Lordy, OG, you are swimming in peppers! Those look delish!
I too had a bunch of peppers to deal with. I am going to freeze them at some point. All tomato plants done except for the South annex plant. Also the only reminding eggplant. A few pepper plants still allowed to see what will happen after hard pruning and picking everything else!

There she blows, summer is done except for the preserves!

You are right, SR, we have been swimming in peppers! I planted 6 each of Bell, Banana, and Jalapeno peppers, and they all outdid themselves in producing peppers. This was the year of the nightshades - the peppers, eggplants, and tomatoes! My wife blames it on all of the coffee grounds I put into the compost - she says the plants are so loaded with caffeine that they can't sleep at night. Ha!
Next year I might just put in 4 plants of each....

We are under a freeze warning for tonight, so what the frost has not killed will be finished tonight. Rain all day today, so no garden work getting done. I still have to cut, chop, and drop all of the pepper plants, and remove the tomatoes and their cages. As soon as I can get the beds cleaned, and new compost put down, they will be sowed with Winter Rye and Crimson Clover and left for the winter.

I got out there yesterday, all tomatoes down, all but 2 pepper plants down, but peppers picked. Lettuces left to go but they will freeze tonight. I am good with it.OhioGardener wrote:We are under a freeze warning for tonight, so what the frost has not killed will be finished tonight. Rain all day today, so no garden work getting done. Need to make casseroles and freeze peppers for winter. Might roast some maters and peppers...only have a few maters left. I already made salsa, and have a bunch...maybe I will try my Vegetti thing, and make a light sauce for a spaghetti swap???!!!

It’s All Over!!!
Hard freeze coming! I went out and picked the last of the one eggplant, and a bunch of little green peppers! I am so blessed to have this bounty!!!! Wow!
One tomato plant still going, on the south wall of my dark red brick house. It will have a month, in my experience. My daughter is the only one who likes them. The Black freebies from Bakers. They are pretty, but mealy and not sweet, IMO. I like sweet little maters! Missed my Sungold this year
but they crack...

Nice cool weekend here. Things ticking down. Spent all yesterday making unstuffed pepper casserole to freeze, and today did a big batch of chili. Bought freezer bags, so the rest will go in the freezer!

That makes at least two of us!
Spent the last two days cleaning all of the beds, adding compost to bring the soil levels back up, and sowing Winter Rye and Crimson Clover cover crops. All of the beds are put to rest for the winter now. Last night we saw our first snow flurries for this winter season. Already missing working in the gardens!
But, all of the vegetables are persevered either by canning or freezing, and we're ready for to cooler weather with homemade chili and casseroles....

YES! Now it is our chance to watch all the hot weather folks and their bounty! And dream, and make changes of what we loved, hated, will change, etc.OhioGardener wrote:Scorpio Rising wrote:OK, I really want a small greenhouse...

I have a couple things to still clean out this weekend. Then will top off, and plant garlic. And live vicariously!

Rainy, windy and cold here today. Baking bread sounds wonderful on these kinds of days, SR. My indoor go to was the crockpot and the dehydrator.

Yes, and not appreciating it! We missed fall this year - one day we had the air conditioner on, and the next day we had to turn the furnace on.

Drool, drool....
We're still picking cherry tomatoes every day or so, just not from the garden. When I cleaned the gardens, I cut off the tomato plants and hung them upside down in the mud room. The tomatoes are continuing to ripen, but there are getting to be less and less of them every day. Soon, too soon, we will be tomatoless....
This was my first year using the Texas Tomato Cages, and it made it really easy to cut off the plants just below the last branch with tomatoes on it, and pull them out the top of the cages.

I made the EPIC mistake of not planting my beloved Sungold cherry maters....was overrun with them last year, had A REACTION as I have been known to have, and planted zero. Wah. Those babies deliver. And deliver, and deliver. You get it.
