Mini pumpkin question
The surprise volunteer in my garden was a mini pumpkin growing among my corn. I am still watering my corn because it is tasseling and putting out silks, so watering my corn is very important at this corn growing stage, but today I found two mini pumpkins cracked. I've never grown mini pumpkins or regular pumpkins before and I'm not sure if I need to cure it. Information on the internet is for large pumpkins. I'd like to save the remaining mini pumpkins. I removed the cracked ones. Here are my cracked mini pumpkins. Do mini pumpkins need curing and for how long?

Rose, Sorry for the cracks on your volunteer minis. Hope there are some others that will remain intact. As far as curing, I always have. Like a large pumpkin, they are cured when you can't puncture the skin with your fingernail. I'm thinking I used to do it for at least 10 days? One I cured two years ago, sat on my desk for over 18 months before I decided to throw it out in the garden for the wildbirds and squirrels.

Eighteen months sounds good to me if I plan to decorate with these. Otherwise, I'm three months early for Halloween!
Our temperature in the next few days are going to creep up to 102 degrees F. I've had store-bought pumpkins "cooked" in my front yard. Another question: Can these be cured outside in the shade or, in my house where I keep at 80 degrees F?

Re: Mini pumpkin question
I had to find the book I've used as reference for many years. It is Home Gardening Wisdom by Dick and Jan Raymond. (1982 Garden Way Inc.
Their description suggests curing in a warm, well-ventilated place between 75F and 85F for a week or two.

I guess they will have to stay inside the house. Thanks for your help.bluelacedredhead wrote:Their description suggests curing in a warm, well-ventilated place between 75F and 85F for a week or two.
You quoted a book, so I was inspired to check out my library and I found Amy Goldman's The Compleat Squash, A passionate Grower's Guide to Pumpkins, Squashes and Gourds--a beautiful book. I think my volunteer miniature pumpkin is a Jack Be Little pumpkin because the author describes that the Jack Be Little has ten deep radial furrows. Most of my miniature pumpkins has ten deep radial furrows! She quotes a Cucurbitologist (what a cool name for a squash expert) who thinks the Jack Be Little is in the Acorn squash family. It was introduced to the public in 1986.

Re: Mini pumpkin question
Hi Rose,
I was also thinking it was a Jack Be Little. It's wonderful that you have Amy Goldman's book to refer to and confirm our suspicions. I quite enjoyed reading that book although I don't own a copy.
