@OhioGardener wrote:Same here in SW Ohio. Started raining yesterday afternoon around 3 O'clock, and hasn't stopped yet. Local weather says we have received 5.5", and will likely received 8" before the rain ends. But, they say the rain won't end until tomorrow afternoon.  I had planned to make another batch of compost tea this weekend, to apply Monday morning, but I will have to postpone that until the water table returns down to ground level.
I just checked the rain gauge. 6.75 inches since 8:00 pm last. I knew it rained through the night and still raining now but that blew me away.  Wow.. 6.75 inches in just 12 hours?

So strange how we have these extremes in temperature and precipitation levels...raining here too, but my gauge showed 1.5” since yesterday, maybe a bit more.  Much cooler.

Mr. Booker and OG, You do realize that the amount of rain you just received is the amount of total rainfall I received last year. Razz

All totaled, we had 9.25 ins over two days. Had a few inches of water standing in the garden but it didn't last long. It was a little "much" bur we needed it.

Likewise, we have received 9.75" of rain over 3 days.  We are supposed to have 3 or 4 dry days, and then the rain starts again.

That is what I have missed since we moved from Southern Illinois, where we had sandy loam, to Southern Ohio, where we have clay, and more clay. The old in-ground garden we had here would stand full of water for days after a heavy rain and many plants would literally drown. Neighbors suggested that we have the garden tiled so that the water would drain down. That s what got me interested in raised beds and SFG - they retain just the amount of water they need and let the rest drains through. But, instead of the recommended 6" beds, I put in 18" high beds so it wouldn't stress all of the metal plates in my back nearly as much.

Yes, I realize that - we spent about month in the Mojave Desert in June/July, and saying it was dry there would be a huge understatement! It would be nice if it would spread itself out a little though - in most of August we had no rain at all and everything dried out, the grass turned brown (kind of like the no-grass brown you have), and we had to water the gardens on a regular basis. Then the rain started and it never stopped. Now the grass has grown so much with all of the rain that it looks more like spring than fall.

Our weather is really nice today. Finally a clear, sunny day, and blue skies. We've just had such a weird summer, HOT, very humid as usual, lots of really cloudy days, and lots of rain. The garden just seemed to languish. Few tomatoes. Two cucumbers. No peppers. And it's the middle of September, and my basil has not even threatened to bolt! It's sickly looking, yellowish and tastes anemic. 180 degrees from last summer. Boy, do I miss my tomatoes!!! I hope all of you have fared better.

It's a beautiful sunny 29C (84F) here in Canada's capital.  Hard to believe that in January the garden will have several feet of snow covering everything and the temperature could easily be -29C (-20F) and colder with the wind chill.

Really beautiful here today - sunny and 83°F. Couldn't ask for a better day. Spent the day getting a new raised bed set up and filled with soil, then sowed Crimson Clover on it for a cover crop to overwinter so it will be ready for next spring's planting.

Tonight we are supposed to start getting the remnants of Tropical Storm Florence, with rain for the next 3 days.

A major tornado hit our city yesterday. Thankfully it missed us. We have no power and it could be out for days. Within walking distance of our house there are many power poles and trees down and houses are damaged. In other areas buildings have been destroyed and cars overturned. I took the photo not far from where we live.

I calculated that the smaller EF2 tornado that hit Ottawa and the one closest to us was as close as 1500 feet from our house. The larger EF3 tornado was 15 miles away as the crow flies. We sustained no damage PTL. We got power back at 4:45 am Monday ( went out around 6 pm Friday). The electricity crews did a great job considering the level of damage.

Drone coverage of the damage from the EF3 tornado.

Glad you're safe Trolleydriver. We have relatives in Gatineau. One had power restored late Saturday, the other yesterday I believe. Considering the devastation, it's a blessing that more people weren't hurt or killed.

It is now confirmed that a third tornado touched down on Friday in our area. This was an EF1 (wind speeds up to 175 killometres/hour). This one was 75 km from our house. Our son was in that location visiting a friend around the time of that tornado. The EF2 and EF3 tornadoes that were much closer to us had speeds up to 220 km/hr and 265 km/hr respectively.

This photo shows the path of the EF2 tornado near our house which is located at the centre of the white X. If it had veered south instead of north it would have been in our neighbourhood. The blue circle is the location of the power substation that got wiped out.

Third day of rain here in SW Ohio, and everything is totally saturated. Picked tomatoes this evening, but threw away more than I kept due to splitting from all of the rain. The Red Russian Kale, though, is outdoing itself and I picked a huge bowl full of leaves from it.  Fall is settling in fast.

Wish I liked kale.  It grows like a weed here.  Weather here is unstable.  Threats of storms, spotty.  My garden is slowly fading.  It’s OK, I am getting tired of it!Cool

I hear you SR and I just planted more this week.   Laughing

We have a 60% chance of showers tonight with north wind 7-13 mph, gusting up to 28.  The overnight low is forecast to be 49 F while tomorrow is to be sunny and 66 F.  Fall is on the way!
