Hello from Hagerstown MD
Been gardening for quite a while and I want to try something new in my traditional row garden to lessen the weeding and be more productive. I have Mel's SQF bible.
Is there a list of the number of squares to plant of each common vegetable, or number of plants, for a family of 2. (not including our cat) and of course some for the little bugs?
my plowed garden plot is 10 x 30 ft
I was thinking of making 2 each 3x 10 foot beds (60 SQF) with 2 ft wide borders of mulch
Separate from that i will have 4 each, 3 ft wide x 1 foot beds for climbing plants.. and 4 tomato plants
My desire is to sow seeds outside with as many types of vegetables, some butterfly flowers, and herbs.
For staggered planting like beets do you keep the extra squares empty for the 2-3 weeks ?
Thank you all - David

Hey! Welcome David, you are in the right place! I am sure some folks on here can say what translates in SFG to feed 2, and I know the book does address that as well.
You will be (my prediction) a huge convert; this method ( and I have done Rodale strict organic row gardening) AMAZED. Just so nice and easy as far as ongoing weeding, maintenance, and just overall ease of cultivating!

Hi David. Welcome from the Atlanta, GA area! Glad you've found us!
A suggestion - if you're planning on squash-type plants, that 2 foot walkway might not be enough. They like to sprawl... And will you be able to get a wheelbarrow or something similar through there?
Is your SFG book the All New Edition 2? There were a lot of improvements to the "system" in that one...
Excited to hear about your garden! And I'm sure some of the others will chime in shortly to answer your other questions. :-)

Hi David, Welcome to the Forum from California! I personally think 3' wide beds of 2" x 8" wood for frames are great for tending to the plants. I would recommend 3' isles (covered with weed cloth and wood chips as the plants can really spill over. One of our members (Yolos) has 2' wide beds for peas and beans. (Hope my memory is good) For corn, 4' foot wide beds work.
As far as how many beds you need to feed two people, what did you grow in the traditional beds and what do you like to eat? Do you can, blanch/freeze or dehydrate?
This is exciting! Do send us photos of your journey. We love photos.

I don't know of a list of vegetables amounts like you describe but I have looked at similar lists for row-gardening, but they didn't make sense to me. There seemed to be way way too much of some and not enough of others. It really depends on what you like, how much yield you get, and what else you're growing.
Here's a thread with more thoughts on the topic: https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t20193-how-much-to-plant
For staggered planting, the first empty slot of 2-3 weeks you would probably need to leave empty, unless you planted it with something before the first week -- 14 days isn't enough time to get vegetables to maturity, 21 days is barely enough for some baby greens. But once you start stacking the empty time together, you can fit in other vegetables -- so the 4-6weeks before the third planting of beets would be enough time to grow something.
Here's an example plan using beets, using six squares, for six staggered plantings. This plan has you starting a new square of beets every 3 weeks, and assumes they will be harvested at 9 weeks. I don't know whether this timing is perfectly suitable versus the climate where you are, but it should give you an idea of how you could plan things. Week 1 for this plan is April 20-26.
Square#1:Week 1-9 Beets #1 Week 10 through to frost Beans
Square#2:Week 1-3 empty* Week 4-12 Beets #2 Week 13-until end of season Snow or Snap Peas
Square#3:Week 1-7 Lettuce Week 7-15 Beets#3 Week 16-24 Lettuce
Square#4:Week 1-9 Spinach Week 10-18 Beets #4 Week 19- baby bok choy
Square#5:Week 1-12 Carrots Week 13-21 Beets #5 Week 22-24-28 mustard greens baby-grown
Square#6:Week 1-15 Beans** Week 16-24 Beets #6 Week 24 is close to first frost? – leave empty
*or start something before "Week 1", such as radishes or rocket/arugula, now (April 4th)
**If April 20th isn't after your last frost, wait until 1-2weeks after your last frost date to sow these

Hi David,
I'm your neighbor just down the street in Glen Burnie. Just spent Easter with relatives in Cumberland. I'm also a SFG Certified Instructor.
Will you be going to the Mother Earth News Fair in Frederick on June 2-3? I'll be there on the 2nd (I'm teaching SFG classes here in GB on the 3rd.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
