I have not, but I carry a photo card in my wallet about them. They usually rest with their wings closed, so the bright red isn't visible; in some photos they seemed very well camouflaged.

At a conference this past weekend I learned that one of their preferred host plants is the tree of heaven, which is not native to North America, and is invasive/bad for the environment. I also learned that tree of heaven logs are very good for growing mushrooms as mentioned here:
http://www.sharondalefarm.com/the-easiest-mushrooms-to-grow/
Late winter/now is the best time for cutting deciduous logs for growing mushrooms because the energy (sugars, nutrients, etc.) is concentrated in the sapwood (i.e. not in the leaves since there aren't any.)

I’m telling you, the dangers of non-native plants just keep adding up.  Bringing Nature Home by Douglas Bellamy is one of the best reads I have bought in a long time.  Some of the plants we think are native are just not, but they have been around for a long time.  They do not support any native species, and this is a perfect example.

Well, now you've done it, Scorpio. I will probably order a used copy off the Good will site. Wink
