I didn't do my homework and ordered sunchoke tubers, cuz I thought they would make a great addition to our salads, but when I searched how to prepare them, I found that they have a very serious gassy effect. We have enough stomach problems in our house without deliberately asking for more, so these 4babies are up for adoption. I understand they can spread like crazy, so if there's a lot of interest I can send out one or two to each person, but if only one person wants them, I'll send out all 4

I can plant this in place of my sunflowers up against the fence on either side of the sun, does this look like a good area?

I think they're an invasive perennial. I've never seen one before, so maybe someone else can answer your question. I could send you 2 to make sure you get at least 1. Please PM me with your address and I'll get them out tomorrow.

Hi SQWIB! I grow Jerusalem Artichokes. I love them. I think they will do great where you've suggested BUT I don't recommend you plant them in typical ANSFG raised beds - I don't grow mine there. They are native to North America, and a perennial, but they don't stay where you put them. They go in the back of the garden, not in a bed. This explains better than I can:

Here's a photo of my Jerusalem artichokes this year. I think they are about 10ft high.
I had to plant back fewer than last year because they are just too productive.Free Sunchoke Tubers Img_0210

I would be interested in those artichokes if you still have them.  It's been years since I had them but I remember enjoying it very much.  I am aware of how prolific they grow.   Thanks for the offer.

Okey doke. PM me with your address and I'll get them out tomorrow. If I don't have any other takers, I'll send you 2. If anyone else wants any, I'll send out 1 per person. Cool

Any chance you have any of these left?  I'd love to try them out if you do.

I may be able to share a few... but I haven't harvested yet, so I don't know for sure. Between planting fewer this year, and the evidence of voles in my garden, I don't want to promise extras that I don't have.

I let the tops die all the way back before I dig them. They are mostly done, so soon-ish... Not this weekend, it's raining, and not the week after that because I'll need to let things dry back out because they are in my clay-heavy soil. Digging it when soggy is messy, somewhat dangerous (slippery!), and seems to mess up the tilth.

I'll reiterate what I said above: don't put these in raised beds, don't put them at the front of the garden, and don't expect them to restrict themselves to where you put them. They spread wide and deep.

If you do find that you have a few to spare, I'd love some.  I appreciate the heads up on how invasive they are. I plan on putting them on back the fence line, and treating them like bamboo.

I harvested the sunchokes today. There were sections that were just solid sunchoke tubers affraid I'm a bit baffled (or maybe slightly frightened) as to how I seem to have gotten the same yield from planting 5 this year as I did planting 9 last year. They don't all fit in the cooler in the garage. Again.

I can definitely share with you JenniG. I tried to set aside some smallish (maybe ping pong ball size?) ones for you, unknobbed ones because I need to be able to clean them well so I don't send you invasive flatworms or any other soil-borne pests. PM me and we'll work out how many you want and such.
