Power finally came back on . It was off for 8 hours. I was really getting worried about my freezer full of beef and home grown veggies. But it looks like they made it thru the outage. The temp in one freezer was 10 degrees and 17 in the other freezer. But the temp in the refrigerator part was 50 degrees so I may have lost a few things in the refrigerator.

Question - one thing in the refrigerator I don't want to lose was a bowl of grape tomatoes I had skinned and was waiting to harvest some more tomatoes to add to the batch. Do you think the tomatoes that were already skinned and ended up in a 50 degree refrigerator would still be good to freeze. I don't see why not because they really don't have to be refrigerated. What say you.

Marie and CC, Glad to see you have your priorities straight. Razz

Yolos, I don't see why you can't freeze them. The old mandatory restaurant temps were 45*F, then they were lowered to 41*F. This is just to give you a perspective that 50*F for a short time shouldn't matter.

As much as I love gardening, prior to the storm the garden was the least of my concerns. The tornadoes were the biggest concern, but thankfully we were only without power for 48 hours, and we're so grateful that the only damage was minor and that was to our landscape. Kiki, my Garden Girl,

was so grateful that we brought her inside. Her first night sleeping inside. We've tried bringing her in before but she normally prefers to be an outdoor cat.

Before Irma hit I had just planted the first two of three beds in prior weeks. I was amazed at how well the tender seedlings held up. I lost very few plants, although my star fruit tree, papaya plants, banana plants and others got thrashed. The new growth is showing how resilient they can be. The old cliché "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" kept going through my head as I surveyed the damage. I'm extra proud of my young mango tree that I grafted, and the weekend before the storm I pruned it really well just in case Irma head our way. Sure enough...and not one branch broke off! Just a few leaves, but now it's got a lot of beautiful new growth.

A friend of ours has his family in Puerto Rico and while they had major damage to their fruit trees, and garden, thankfully their roof held. Most people there are not as fortunate, and the situation there is dire. Sad

Baker Creek Heirlooms has offered to help anyone who has been effected by the hurricanes. Anyone, such as my friend's family whose garden was decimated.... Baker Creek is offering a free restarter kit of seeds. If you need more information please let me know.

Dstack, I'm glad you reported in and that your garden survived as well as it did. Kiki is such an adorable kitty. You need to post her photo under the "garden kitties" thread.

Puerto Rico got hammered so badly. It's not like relief supplies can be driven over. Everything has to go by ship or plane (assuming the airport is operable?). Baker Creek is being very generous with their offer. :-)

According to what I saw this evening, ships are in port (since last Saturday!) ready to off-load, but there are no trucks or drivers to get food, water, meds to where they need to be....

I keep thinking that PR needs water purification units. Doesn't the military have large units for oversea bases?

Canada often sends its Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) reverse osmosis water purification system to stricken areas around the world. I have not heard about them being involved this time.
