Just over the border!
Hi all,
I actually live in New Brunswick, Canada (about an hour past the Canada-US border at Calais, Maine. I see that acording to Boffer's map, I'm in your New England region, so I thought I'd drop in and say hello from over the border! I believe I'm in zone 5. I live on the Bay of Fundy (and I mean right on it -- 3 blocks from the harbour, so we typically get a LOT of fog in the summertime, and I'm hoping that won't be a big problem for me).
I live in the uptown area in Saint John, NB, in a Victorian rowhouse. I have no back yard, but I do have easy access to my flat roof, so that's where I built my SFG! I'm really new at this -- started three weekends ago. I have 2 2 x 8 beds and one 2 x 4 bed, and I'm going to set up an second 2x4 bed today. Most of my squares have a different vegetable or herb planted in it, so I have lots of variety and this first year will be an experiment. So far, I have 9 things sprouting, so so far so good.
I'll post a couple of photos in a minute.
I couldn't find a teacher in my area, so I'm thinking about doing the home study course. I'm totally new to vegetable gardening and SFG, so I'm on a steep learning curve.
Looking forward to learning lots from the rest of you!

Re: Just over the border!
That is so cool! What a perfect picture of the versatility of SFG'ing! So...did you have help carrying all of this up to the roof? i.e. boards/boxes, soil mix...
It's going to be fun to see your rooftop garden progress and I know you're going to enjoy eating the fresh produce even more!

Re: Just over the border!
Thanks, everyone.
As of this am, I can see 11 different crops sprouting. I have 40 something planted (I know, I got a little carried away!), but not all of them have been planted as long. I started planting the first seeds the beginning of May. So far, I think I can see broccoli (2 varieties), kohlrabi, mesclun greens, peas, cabbage, radishes, spinach and swiss chard coming up, and green beans and beets made their first appearance overnight. Technically my last frost danger date isn't until May 30 and it's still pretty cold in the mornings, so I hope I haven't screwed up by planting some things a bit early. I figure this year, I'll just experiment and next year I'll have a better handle on what I need to do.
I forgot to mention, my exposure is mainly north and west, due to taller surrounding buildings, and my SFG gets direct sun from about 11 am on until sunset.
All help and advice is appreciated!

Re: Just over the border!
That's a great way to fulfull your gardening needs....on a rooftop.
I love your garden and your view.
Please keep coming to post pictures as things progress. I'm interested.
I am in Maine but at the lower end of the state so not too close to you, in Zone 5a along Sebabo Lake. I expect last frost date May 30th as well but I bought heavy row cover this year and it protects crops down to 28F degrees (freezing is 32F) so it helped on the nites we got frost. Nothing was damaged of mine. I have cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, sugar snap peas, mesclun mix, spinach, Swiss chard, radishes, and even 3 Oregon Spring Tomato plants growing. Oregon Springs can be planted 4 weeks before the last frost date.
Just keep a few old towels, blankets or sheets handy if you expect a frosty nite. It'll save your crops.
Plant everything you enjoy eating and see what works best for you.
This is only my 2nd year but I learned a lot the 1st year and so will you.
Good luck.

Re: Just over the border!
our last frost date is the 30th, but between May 14 and May 26 the odds are as follows:
May 14 and earlier their is a 50% chance that temperatures will get as low as 36.
May 12 and earlier there is a 10% chance that temperatures will reach as low as 32.
May 26 and earlier there is a 10% chance that temperatures will fall below 36.
May 30th is considered to be the last frost date.
I'd quote my source if I could find it - I copied it into my garden journal. Oops.
PS - I have thought I was 5b for a long time. Most maps are telling me I am 6a.
