I'm new here. I tried sq foot gardening a few years ago, and sort of went well but dropped it during the season. This year went all out - everything you're not supposed to do. I have several beds and it is a lot of work because we put together most of the beds in the spring but liking it.

I have a question - someone who used to do square foot gardening in Encinitas, CA, told me that because we have a short season in Oregon in terms of heat, we should not plant as closely per square foot.

I had a problem with germination (would help if I looked at how old my seed was) so my plants are not super tight, except for my pole beans.

Looking forward to learning...

happy hi from Redding, CA.  glad you\'re here to our forum. I'm too unorthodox to answer your question, but one of the experts will be around shortly to clear things up for you. If you have before and after photos of your new garden, we'd love to see them. Cool

NWG,  Welcome to the Forum from central California!  glad you\'re here The nice thing about this Official SFG Forum is that you can get the real skinny.  You can plant (spacing) just like Mel suggests in his book.  The difference between northern states and southern states will be the in varieties that do best.  You are up in the LONG Day, short season area, while I am down in the SHORT Day, long season area.  Onions (long day) are an example of what you will be looking for.  Compare the "days to harvest" or what ever it is called, selecting those with the fewest number of days to harvest.

I hope other northern folks can help suggest varieties that do well.  (and correct me if I am wrong Embarassed )
