brick compost system?
I was hoping to make a 3-section compost system out of bricks, but I haven't been able to find any pictures of one. Now I'm worried about the idea. Do you think it could work? I was originally going to use wood pallets but those are harder to find than I expected, and I just got a ton of red bricks for free

I guess a brick compost system would work. I would be concerned about getting enough air to the pile using bricks.cpeaches wrote:I was hoping to make a 3-section compost system out of bricks, but I haven't been able to find any pictures of one. I put together a 3-section compost bin using wood pallets without any tools. I just stood the pallets up and used big wire ties to hold them together. There are some free pallets on "Craigslist". Have you checked there?
Here is a pic of the bin when I first put it together in Feb. It started out as a two bin then I added another bin later.
Notice the center divider pallet is smaller so I dont have to lift the compost as high when I turn the pile.

Re: brick compost system?
Hi CPeaches. Welcome from Atlanta, GA!
I certainly think it could work, but you'll need to build in air ventilation. You'll also need to think about height. I doubt I'd go above 3 feet so I could transfer back & forth fairly easily.
Sanderson, I know you have a cement/brick floor on yours. Can you jump in here?

Re: brick compost system?
cpeaches ... how would you hold the bricks together? Would you mortar them in place? I think it would be dangerous to just pile them up. You would not want them to topple over. As well, they will be heavy when built up. I expect they will need some kind of a footing (e.g., cinder blocks, concrete pad, or as a minimum a few inches of crushed rock) so that they don't sink into the ground. I'm just thinking out loud so I don't mind if someone corrects me. BTW I use bricks around a couple of my SFG beds but they are only stacked two or three layers high.

Re: brick compost system?
This is why I was originally looking for an example, to see if others used mortar (or something else or nothing), and how high they built it. Ugh. Thanks for your ideas!trolleydriver wrote:cpeaches ... how would you hold the bricks together? Would you mortar them in place?
As for ventilation, I was thinking of leaving intentional gaps between bricks, perhaps like this or a mix of this and solid layers for more stability:
And thanks for the welcomes, I'm glad to have found this place! And MrBooker thanks for your pic, I can keep looking on Craigslist but apparently people around here are hungry for pallets haha

cpeaches: I see you are from St. Louis. I live just across the river in Millstadt, Illinois. There is a Rural King store in Waterloo, Illinois and they give really good pallets away. That's where I get all of my pallets. Just Google "Rural King" Waterloo, Illinois. The pallets they give away are always stacked down at the end of the bricks and pave stones.cpeaches wrote:This is why I was originally looking for an example, to see if others used mortar (or something else or nothing), and how high they built it. Re: brick compost system?
Marie, It's 101*F here and I have slacked off on everything, including this Forum. Yes, I used pavers and bricks for a solid, clean foundation. The worms come up when the compost is cool. I have changed the liner of the cage by removing the metal window screen and added 1/2" hardware cloth and final lining of commercial weed fabric. Breathable but smooth.
