Buckwheat hulls in compost OK? Empty Buckwheat hulls in compost OK?

Post  point 4/5/2017, 2:08 pm

I have a few pounds of organic buckwheat hulls that were used as Japanese neck pillow stuffing.

Do you think I can mix it into my SFG?  The hulls are non-toxic, supposedly, but will they create air pockets in the MM that won't give roots proper anchoring?  It's like hollow vermiculite.

Thanks in advance.

Point. I don't know the correct answer. Maybe someone else will come along and reply.

I wouldn't put the hulls in the beds because they are not composted. It will probably take a long time for them to break down, and meanwhile, they would tie up the nitrogen. Maybe use them in the compost pile? I tried composting peanut shells and after 2 years, they were still there. Razz

Hi Point!
I haven't seen you around, but it looks like you've been here longer than me - so Hello! Smile
It looks like buckwheat hulls are sometimes sold as a mulch, so you could use them on top of the MM ~1/2" thick per one site), rather than inside it. Another site mentioned that one will need to keep them moist to prevent them from blowing away.

I was thinking mulch, too, but it kind of defeats the purpose if you have to keep watering the mulch.

I think I would compost it as a brown.

I would put it into the compost bin.

Thank you all.

Beetles, I don't write much on the forum, but I sure do read it.   Irrigating mulch would get expensive, especially if the town decides to announce a drought again this year.

So I'll take the plunge and put the hulls in one bed only after composting.
