Planted 5 more squares Sun; a repeat square of 'Bloomsdale' spinach and different varieties of lettuce, carrots, beets, and radishes.  So far 15/32 squares planted.

Yeah, I had to call in sanderson to post my pics....no idea what the prob is...

Same here, stuff is growing.  Trying to harden off my herbs and maters.  Need to get some barrier on the kales.  I really like it when young and tender.  Not sure if any of my Romanesco cauli/broc will make it....

Anybody; when you cut and come again from lettuces, do you use scissors?  Or just pull the leaves, like break them off?  How long does your lettuce go into summer?  The Black seeded Simpson did the best last year.  But I have several longer season varieties in, All Year Long, Marvel of 4 Seasons....

I find lettuce has short roots. To avoid disturbing roots I like the small children's size scissors. It fits my small hands and the short blades allow for a precise cut towards the stem.  Adult scissors work fine if I'm in a hurry and precision doesn't matter. See which works better for you. Larger hands and small scissors would be awkward for some.

I break them off with my thumb nail. Usually forget to bring scissors with me.

Length of growing season will be different everywhere. Also, the more shade they are in during the summer, the longer they last. The one lettuce that is good for the full growing season here is Rouge d' Hiver. Even when it bolts the leaves aren't bitter so I keep pickin' and eatin'.

Thanks, guys!  I have been using my hands, but some of the lettuces are a bit challenging because they grow so low and the leaves are so, ummm, low.  LOL.  The kale is fine to just break off.

I hope I get some extended harvest from my lettuces this year.  That was my goal with a couple of the cultivars I got.  I really like lettuce!

Mustard green seeds arrived today from Baker Creek.  I got the red ones.  Can I direct sow these now?  Or wait til fall? Or next year?  I have never had them or grown them. But many here rave about them, and I like spicy.....

I use scissors, and cut the outermost leaves as close to the stem as possible. Some of the leaves just break cleanly off. Most of the lettuce I planted last year in April continued producing until around the end of June. I did Black Seeded Simpson and Buttercrunch.

OK, thanks....I think I will try to do scissors.  I feel like brutality is occurring on the lettuces.

I wish I had kept better notes about dates; last year I did BSS and Matchless.  THis year I have 5 types, BSS, Matchless, Green Ice, All Year Round and Marvel of 4.

Hopefully I will find out what works longer term!

What about the mustard greens?

I'll have to let someone else reply to the mustard greens question - haven't tried those, yet.

Here are some photos from Monday when I went out and got the first of my lettuce and kale.  I think this is my best leafy bed so far, ever.

Closeup of the Sea of Red lettuce.  Very pretty.  I haven't cut into it yet, but it has picked up on its  rate of growth and I don't think it will be long before I get to have a taste...

And the tomatoes are back inside today, under the lights once again... I was planning to start putting them out this weekend, but we've got chilly temps and rain in the forecast all weekend... and snow falling(?!) out in Garden City.  So, yeah... not gonna happen today.

Wow, Kate, your leaves are gorgeous!  And same here, rainy and cold.  Maters and peppers inside, in the window....sort of.

I resurrected a Mustard Green thread and am getting some input there.  Mr. Booker has grown them...

Breahtaking! It must make you so happy every time you step out there and see that. What is that beautiful lettuce in the very front of the full bed shot?

I saw the beautiful photo he posted of the plant he raised... made me start wondering where I might find room for one.

That's some Red Sails lettuce from Lake Valley.  It's already one of my new favorites.  Excellent germination, grows fast, it's pretty in the garden, and has a wonderful delicate flavor.

And yes, I really am enjoying how this bed is filling in and everything is bursting with growth.  It has turned out very nice so far this year. Now, let's see if I can do the same with all the warm season crops. sunny
