Asparagus, Ohio 2017
I noticed baby asparagus spears came up the past few days. A full month earlier than usual. This week freezing night temperatures are returning. Time to bring out the hoops and covers. I'll show the baby pictures in a little bit when the sun rises.

There are two in the center, with rounded tips. These pulled down into the soil a bit as they were up about an inch when it was warmer. Covered everything up with straw with a stretch of freezing night temps coming. Will cover with hoops and a sheet also.

WOW LM.. I am envious of you. mine are under a foot of snow. I always remember in Kingsolvers Animal Vegetable Miracle book, she decided to start her year of eating entirely locally based on the day that the asparagus emerged.
...... and so a new year begins.

GWN I would have to admit asparagus is the very first thing to make me excited for the new season. It use to be strawberries, and those are starting to look alive again. But the hands down winner is asparagus.GWN wrote:.... Garlic is in there too... I LOVE to see rhubarb poking up as well. I just went through my "journal" to see when I usually see the first asparagus, and looks like some years as early as the 24th of march, I just do not see that happening this year. Hope you do not have too many frosty nights left

Re: Asparagus, Ohio 2017
I finally got around to reading this thread. I thought it was a newbie from Asparagus, Ohio, and came in to welcome them.
But instead, the photos are making me have to get up out of my warm cozy bed to grab last year's calendar and see when my asparagus sprouted.
So LM, do the llamas poo on the asparagus bed or do you have to spread it there yourself?

Love - love - love your interpretation of the topic. I try to be clear but -
The llamas mostly poop all together in community piles. Makes it pretty easy to wheel barrow the stuff over to the garden. Makes for a pretty clean pasture too.

It looks like we are 2 hours apart. If you're planning to be in the area send me a PM ahead of time and we'll make arrangements. Bring your own empty garbage cans, feed bags, etc. and I'll gladly provide the shovel.
