This morning Mrs TD took out of the freezer some potato-leek soup that I made a few months ago using leeks grown in the SFG.  Can't wait to taste it.  Smile

I guess I'll have to try growing leeks again this year.

What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 2 Empty What are Hawaii folks planting and harvesting?

Post  kauairosina 1/2/2017, 2:33 pm

We have been harvesting lots of beautiful lettuce and other salad greens throughout the cold, rainy times.  Got a load of broccoli to cook tomorrow night.  We have been experimenting with cassava, making french fries and hash browns and a Filipino dessert called Babingka.   Life is good and I wish all of you the best for the coming year.  Very Happy

Had my very first ginger root from a plant I started last summer and have in the house.  The turmeric is growing more slowly, but I should be able to harvest it later this year.

Fresh tomatoes from my greenhouse!  Mmmmmmmmmm Very Happy

I brought in a huge bunch of nanners yesterday.  This morning I took 4 slightly over ripe short fat plantain nanners and stuck em in a blender with 3 large eggs.  If ya using store bought nanners do one egg for every nanner we cut back cause ours are smaller.  Blend it till it is a mush then keep blending till it increases in size get some air in it.  Then poor it into a hot buttered fry pan and make pancakes.  Pour it straight from the blender cause ua may have to re blend to get air back in it.  Then try them with butter and syrup like any pancake.  one of our favorite fall/winter breakfasts.

Oh, Cappy reminded me.  Grandson Collin has harvested two huge racks of bananas.  We take them up to Koke`e (3500 ft) to  ripen more slowly.   Collin makes many banana muffins for us with all kinds of wonderful additions.  No batch is ever the same.

I harvested cilantro and more lettuce this morning to send up to Koke`e with the DDTs.  The Dana family, father Ned, son Collin, daughter Lindsey.  They go up and do a lot of work at our mountain cabin and those young`uns are invaluable working around here.  Those last two are my hana`i grandchildren that I often refer to.  (Hana`i in Hawaiian means adopted. Works for me.)

We are no where as tropical as you guys are but we can grow bananas some years.  They are very hearty and come back after a rare freeze.  Several years ago they froze so I wacked them down and composted them they are wonderful in the compost pile.  our season is too short for them it takes 2 years for them to make they grew from the ground and since we did not have a hard freeze they have done well for the last 2 years.  this year we also had a pretty fare pecan harvest from our lil tree.  Peg made 24 mini loafs of her famous gluten free nanner nut bread and we gave it out to the neighborhood for Christmas gifts.

Forgot to mention.  Grandson Collin harvested about 30 or more coconuts and scooped the meat out.  I'm not up to making stuff today but have frozen all and will make coconut milks and creams next week.

I wasn't aware of the gluten free sub.  Everything we cool is 100% gluten free Peggy is a celiac so we live a gluten free life cept for me and my beer. What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 2 3170584802

I will keep a look out and contribute most definitely.  I'll check with her see if the nanner nut bread is on line it's a neighborhood favorite and this year we were able to make 3 batches with our nanners and pecans from our yard.  Still have plenty bananas left but outa pecans but I am sure banana nut bread, chips, pancakes, stuffed and smoked on the pit etc will be in the near future.

Hello All! I picked the last bit of peppers before the cold snap this weekend. Now the plants are dead, but the broccoli and Kale survived. That is one thing about Louisiana, the long growing season. I planted the pepper plants mid April and last weekend they died with the 22 degree weather.

Ryan ... those are lovely peppers.

Included along with other things in our lunch today, we had dill pickles that I canned from cucumbers grown in the SFG as well as Daikon Radish microgreens that were grown indoors under the grow light.  My 91 year old Mom who is visiting with us really liked the microgreens. She asked if she could grow some at her place. So when we take her home later this week I'll set her up to grow some microgreens for herself. Very Happy
