Foxtail in the garden Empty Foxtail in the garden

Post  melissam41 10/5/2016, 5:26 pm

I just bought a house that has a lovely big raised bed in the backyard which would be perfect for my veggies, except that it is overrun with foxtail (and for some reason, slug-infested hostas).

The whole thing has been under black tarp for the past two weeks as I try to kill it all. My plan is to pull out all the plants and throw them out with the trash. Is there anything else I should do to a) prevent them from coming back next year, and b) get the space prepped for spring veggies? I've never used herbicide but I'm willing to if it's necessary- I just don't want to taint the soil.

When you pull the plants out and check for obvious seeds and hosta roots, can you cover with clear plastic for a couple weeks.  The clear plastic will allow the soil to warm up and force some remaining weed seeds to sprout.  You can then pull those out, and it should help reduce the number of weeds that would sprout next summer.  Please don't use a herbicide.  It could put the garden back a couple of years.

Keep us updated on the process, and, congratulations on the house!!

Can you show me a picture of this " Fox tail " please Sanderson .

I don't know what it is as it's not a plant name we use on this side of the pond

Dave .

Yeah, Melissa, I have it all over my perennial bed and area by my pool at this time of year.

Unfortunately, even if you sprayed (Roundup) on there, the grass would die, but then you would need to put a pre-emergence (Preen) on to suppress the seeds that will germinate next year.

Solarize the best you can, and be prepared to pull some weeds next year.  Maybe slate for summer plants, so you can pull in spring?

Thoughts?

Here are 2 photos, the first of fox tail seeds when dry.  Very nasty for dogs and cats, and your socks. Foxtail in the garden Weed_f10

This is of red stem filaree seeds with their cork screw "tails".  Another nasty for pets. Foxtail in the garden Weed_r10

Ahhh! gotcha Sanderson ,  that's a wild barley head  to me ,

Evil things due to the barbs & very very scratchy & they are a one way ticket .. We used to put them just under our shirt cuff then move our arms like crazy as fast as we could to see who'd win the race to get the barley head  out your shirt via your armpit  .

One long hot summer school holiday we were  playing attackers & defenders diving down & crawling through long grass etc to get to the home base with out being caught  .  I got one stuck in the back of my throat  after a spectacular long rolling dive on virgin ripe grasses .  I walked half a mile home , hardly daring to breath , couldn't speak so I pointed it out to mum .

She put an old style wooden dolly clothes peg in the back of my teeth to keep my mouth open ,  then gently proceeded to use a pair of long  tweezers to pull it out bit by bit as several bits had broken free of the main seed head.
A good cry , a few coughs & gargle with strong salty water then I went back to my mates to carry on with our game .

Mellisa , that looks like a simple grass that's run to seed .. you can make seed shooters out of them by making a lsort of etter P  with the head & stem then pull the head back through theh loop on th stem .

I'm familiar with using weeds as shooters, but we used narrow-leafed plantain flower stalks instead of grasses. I'm pleased to meet the inventor of the game! lol!

Is sneakily sticking cleavers (=catchweed bedstraw=velcro plant) on the back of someone's shirt or coat also one of your games?

The longer narrow plantains do indeed make for good shooters as well. My Grandfather showed me how to do it way back in the mid 1950's when I was five . It didn't take me long to be able to outshoot him as we sat on the river bank in betwen fishing & hoping the cows didn't come to investigate us .

Putting sticky goose type grasses , haireth balls & burrs on peoples backs as you run by them ..Who ME ? . Not any more , everyone can run much faster then me these days . Laughing
