Waterloo Ontario. Harvesting cucumbers.

Post  petee_c on 8/8/2016, 2:21 pm

Is there an ideal size/yield ratio for harvesting cucumbers?

We've got 2-3 cucumber plants taking over our raised garden.

We harvested our 1st cucumber last night. It was probably 7-8" long. We were surprised at the prickly  texture of the skin.

Tasted great. Washed the skin with a nylon scrubby and got the prickly bits rubbed off.

Our garden probably gets 6 hrs of sun /day. We have another cuke the same size, plus a bunch of tiny ones. What size do you harvest your cucumbers? Does harvesting the bigger ones promote the growth of the smaller ones?

The prickly feature is dependent on variety.  I grow Muncher cucumbers which are not prickly but are smooth skinned.  We can pick them and eat them sitting in the garden.

The size also depends on the variety.  I grow one cucumber that the package says to pick at 4 - 6 inches.  Another variety says 8 inches.  Another one says 6-8 inches.  If they get too big they become pithy.

Yes, harvesting the cucumbers before they get too big promotes the setting on of more cucumbers.

Petee_c ... We are visiting in your area. We have been in Cambridge for a few days and on Wednesday we will pass by you on our way to Elmira. Hoping to get over to Anna Mae's Bakery and Restaurant in Millbank as well.
