Seedling "Neat Trick"
My kids planted our beans this year and we had a few seedlings that came up two per spot (two seeds) and some that didn't come up at all. Rather then cutting off the extra plants and reseeding the holes, I moved the extra plants.
It was so easy because of the Mel's Mix. I just scooped under the extra seedling and lifted it up - roots and all just lifted out cleanly. It didn't seem to hang up on the dirt at all. I gently placed in the new hole and gently covered it with mix.
I tried this 4 days ago and the plants don't look any different then their neighbors. They never showed any sign that they even noticed the move. Not ONE!
I also did this with some midget melons my kids planted in the wrong spot. Again, after 4 days they look perfect.
I am sure that this won't work for small seedlings or those that are especially root sensitive but for the beans and melons it worked great. Love this Mel's Mix.

I've done that too with my swiss chard plants and plan to do that with my cucumber plants. In fact the seedlings are quickly passing up my swiss chard plant I started indoors. I started a cucumber plant indoors but lost it because of a mold. Moving seedlings in the Mel's Mix is very easy and dosn't shock the poor little guys.

I have done this
I did this yesterday with a cucumber plant. Two came up in one hole, and none in another. I am glad to hear of others having luck with this as I figured it was worth a try. Couldn't hurt.

I did it with radishes -- I had 100% germination and an empty square, so now I have twice the radishes (and they're doing quite well, says the proud n00b)

Oh, my goodness! How sacrilegeous!
Didn't you all feel Mel looking over your shoulders?
I've been so tempted but just couldn't get the view of the look on his face out of my mind that I never had the courage. Well, now that I know he is busy waving his finger at you guys I think he will be too busy to notice when I go out tomorrow morning and do the same thing!
Thanks for the courage
Claire

Re: Seedling "Neat Trick"
Did that with my lettuce! I may try it to even out un-even germination with some other plants, but I am still playing the "identify the seedling" game!
Re: Seedling "Neat Trick"
Sorry...why is that a bad thing? Twice as many veggies, the seeds go twice as far, no waste...why would anyone disapprove of it?
I figure if I cut them off, they're a loss...if I move them to an empty space and they grow, bonus veg. If they don't grow...I've lost nothing.

Oh, LaFee! Surely, you know I jest!
Mel frowns upon "thinning". He talked about it in the class I took and on pages 38-39 of the book, he says, "Thinning is a lot of work and also seems to disturb the roots of the remaining plant, and that's not good. ...you just take a pair of scissors and snip off all but the strongest one. That eliminates any disturbance of the plant you want to keep, and you're not tempted to replant others. The only thing you need to do is just muster the courage to make that initial snip and it's all over." (Sounds like a bris to me!)
I cringe every time I snip! But as I said -- the vision of him frowning on me is enough to make me snip. I'm working on it. Keeping in mind that he's busy frowning at all you other guys, maybe he won't notice me when I don't snip. Shhh. Don't look now. You didn't see that, did you?

Re: Seedling "Neat Trick"
Aye, aye, aye, Claire.... Since I haven’t taken any SFG classes and I haven't met Mel in person, I just can't imagine him frowning or shaking a finger at me. OK, I was being cavalier and rogue but hey… I saved a life! (not to mention I didn’t have to reseed and wait 2 weeks for the new seeds to play catch-up).
And to be clear, I didn’t tug the plant out to thin as Mel mentions on pages 38-39, I gently scooped the plant from UNDER the roots and air lifted it to its new home to propagate. The neighboring plant roots were not troubled. See… it is like “TOTALLY” different!
Of course, Mel is welcome to stop by my house and set me right any time. I would love to have him over.

Re: Seedling "Neat Trick"
Successfully moving seedlings is a sure sign of the fact you are gaining skill and confidence in the art of gardening. Congrats noobs, you're moving on up.
Re: Seedling "Neat Trick"
I will be gently moving all "extras" from now on! You have shamed me into it!
