Peat Pellets- Self watering options?
Looking for advice on options for self watering a Jiffy seed pellet tray- capillary matting? Other?
Or if my only option for a 9 day vacation is to have a neighbor babysit my tray of babies until we get back.
1st year newbie here with a few promising seedlings (peppers, kale, lettuce, basil) that I started with Jiffy peat pellets that I got for free from a friend who didn't want them.
I saw online an option for using capillary matting underneath the seed pellets but can't find info on how long this option would work.
Last year for my flowers I used the terra cotta plant spikes with success, but that was with mature plants that were already potted.
Would it be too soon to pot my seed pellets and do the plant spikes, if I left the boxes inside? I assumed it was way to early to pot them. They are only a couple inches high at most.
Thanks for any and all advice, and of course I ask this 3 days away from when we leave :-(

Re: Peat Pellets- Self watering options?
Yes a capillary mat will work if the water reservoir is deep enough to hold enough water to last the nine days. I have a tray with a capillary mat and the water in the tray lasts about 7 days. If it is not deep enough, you can have your neighbor check it out after a few days to see if it still has water left in the bottom tray. Or you could test it before you leave.
