I've been smugly patting myself on the back all spring because we have had zero cabbage worms in our new SFG box. I planted three grids of onions in the box as well as placing several onion plants around each cabbage and I attributed that to keeping the moths from lighting on the cabbage leaves to lay their eggs.

However, I kept seeing munch damage on a few cabbage plants and tops of my kohlrabis. I looked and looked, and didn't see nary a sign of cabbage worms. I was puzzled as to what was munching away.

The cabbage has started to head, and I noticed a couple of days ago that one head was being eaten out in the center. I looked carefully and saw worm poop clustered in the inside leaves. I spread the leaves apart and found a fat, greasy, cutworm happily curled up inside. When I pulled him out and smashed him, I saw two more small ones at work. I began to check all my plants and found about ten cut worms in all, having a nice buffet of cabbage. Our spring has been cool, just as they like it.

I should know better than to get smug about insects. If one kind doesn't get you, another one will.

Note to self: Cutworms are not bothered by onions.

Sneaky little buggers, aren't they? But now you know and can be vigilant.
