Nice on the free zinnias! I like the look of them planted around that tree, too.

Keep us updated on the pineapple please? I'm so curious.

I wish we had more inside space to grow pineapples inside in the winter, but these puppies are BIG and not very friendly. Shocked

Interesting on the whole pineapple thing!  Love your volunteers!  Very pretty!  Glad you are having a better year, sounds like you have a succession plan!  Nice, CN:cheers:

Thanks, Scorpio. I always have plans. The biggest one right now is trying to come up with better ways to survive next summer, while this past ordeal is fresh in my mind. affraid

Summer is finally, really, actually GONE! Today is the first day of real gardening -- not just trying to keep things alive. We should have 6 glorious weeks of perfect weather for playing outside before it gets too cold and wet. Got 4 months of torture to make up for. Started early this morning, raking leaves. So much to do I don't know where to start. bounce

Post  countrynaturals 9/17/2017, 11:20 am

Not only is the mama plant producing pups, but the top of the pineapple we ate is already producing roots. The ones we started from the grocery store took forever and produced hair-like roots. Take a look at these beautiful big fat roots. We will be planting this puppy next week. Cool

Butterfly Junction - Page 12 Empty Decimated by Grasshoppers?

Post  countrynaturals 9/30/2017, 7:11 pm

My beautiful sweet potato bed was decimated overnight by some unknown assailant -- probably grasshoppers. I thought it would come back, but now I'm not so sure. The little creeps even went after my seedlings. I may have to start over with all of it. Butterfly Junction - Page 12 671790

CN, that is real devastation. Have you noticed grasshoppers? Could it be a bunny or something?

Yes we have seen grasshoppers and no we don't have bunnies -- except for a jack rabbit the size of an elephant that could carry off my entire garden if he wanted to. affraid Luckily he doesn't come inside our fence. Butterfly Junction - Page 12 43549

Butterfly Junction - Page 12 Empty Perennial Kale Experiment

Post  countrynaturals 10/14/2017, 11:27 am

Found an old kale "tree" that was starting to produce new growth at its base. I had planned to harvest the top, pull out the stump, and replant, but the new growth gave me the idea to just top it and see if it will regrow as big and fast as a new planting. geek

That is a good experiment. I wonder if the new growth will be mild tasting, after the plant surviving the brutal summer?

YEE-HAH! I just ordered the ANSFG book and MM already mixed from Home Depot, free delivery, for my new carrot bed.  cheers The only difference is that my bed will be round instead of square, but it will be fun to join in on all the MM discussions I've been missing out on by being OSFG only. Cool

I just realized that I don't post many pics of butterflies, which doesn't properly support the title of my thread, so here are a couple of shots of a big Painted Lady that visited the zinnias, yesterday.

Butterfly Junction - Page 12 Empty Tomatillo

Post  countrynaturals 10/19/2017, 10:54 am

My tomatillo in the Salad Bar is finally starting to produce. I didn't know it needed a 2nd plant to pollinate. Luckily I put a couple more in the Rescue Garden. The bees must have had to work overtime on this one, since those other plants are at least 100' away. If we like these, I will have to find another spot for them, since they want to take over the world. This one is at least 4' high and well over 6' across. Shocked

Lovely butterfly pictures.

Tomatillos make me happy, something about their wild nature. But they are hard to accommodate with out their exuberance being over whelming.

Thanks. I learned a lesson on those. When using an auto-focus camera, be sure the background is vague. When the bg is "interesting" like the bark on that tree, the camera wants to focus on that instead of the subject matter. Mad
